Cardiff City end Germany tour with a draw

By Rich Jones

Cardiff City ended their pre-season tour of Germany with a 1-1 draw against VfL Bochum on Tuesday night.

The Bluebirds lifted the Osnabruck Tournament trophy on Saturday but were unable to end their tour with a victory in a scrappy affair.

They fell behind after half an hour when Tim Hoogland was given space to head past David Marshall and give the 2. Bundesliga side the lead.

After a poor first half performance, Paul Trollope’s side drew level through a Peter Whittingham penalty but were unable to find a winner in the final 40 minutes.

New signing Frederic Gounongbe continued his bright start to life with the club, being brought down in the box after a Semi Ajayi through ball to give Cardiff their leveller.

With Trollope making the radical change to a 3-5-2 formation, Lee Peltier demonstrated plenty of positive signs as he appeared in central defence for the first time.

Jazz Richards also made his debut at right wing back following his recent transfer from Fulham, plus Fabio continued his excellent pre-season on the opposite flank.

There will be plenty for new boss Trollope to ponder as they return to Cardiff unbeaten after three games in Germany.

They will wrap up their pre-season schedule with a trip to Bournemouth to take on Premier League opposition on Saturday before their first Sky Bet Championship fixture against Birmingham City at St Andrews on Saturday, August 6.
