As the Union is set to renovate Solus, the night club, over the summer, they are appealing to students to ‘like’ designs on Facebook and suggest names for the new club.
The Varsity Lash at Solus on Wednesday April 9th will be the final ever Lash event before the redevelopment of Solus ready for Freshers fortnight in September. A weekly fixture on the Students’ Union’s events listings, the Wednesday event enjoys popularity with sports teams who regulary use the events for socials after training.
The renovations to Solus aim to utilise the space during the daytime, as currently it is almost exclusively used for night-time events such as club nights and live music. It currently has a capacity of 2200 and when combined with both the Taf and the Great Hall increases that capacity to 4000. This makes Cardiff Students’ Union one of the biggest club venues in Wales.
The Cardiff University Students’ Union have posted an album of potential designs for the renovation on their Facebook page. Students have been invited to share their thoughts and vote on the best design.
A common trend throughout the designs is the introduction of a skylight and a mezzanine. In addition to a renovation of the space, the name will be changed from Solus, although no new name has been revealed at present. There has been some comment from students that the designs are ‘too much like a coffee shop’ and that it looks very ‘upmarket’.
