The Union has announced that this year’s Summer Ball will take place at the Motorpoint Arena on Friday, June 13th. The event has been called ‘The Greatest show on Earth.’
The line up will be announced soon, and tickets will become available from April 1st via the Student Union website. One the first day of sale, the tickets will be at a cut price of only £25.
This is the first year since 2010 that the Ball has not been held at the Students’ Union when it was held in the Coopers Field event area at Cardiff Castle. The main reason for the move is the impending renovation of Solus – making it impossible to host in in the Union. The decision to move the event also stems from feedback that the student body wanted the event to be on a much larger scale.
Speaking to gair rhydd, Mark Cheeseman, the Union’s Trading Director, said ‘The Motorpoint Arena offers a platform for for space for our own societies to perform as well as providing room for huge headline acts and fairground attratcions.’
Previous years have included entertainment including a casino, circus acts and performers as well a caricature artist, in addition to live music and bands throughout the night. Held ‘From Dawn to Dusk’, past balls have typically lasted from 6pm-6am, including a free breakfast at the end. In a statement from the Union they have hinted that, due to the size of this years venue, there will be space for ‘fairground attractions’ and stages for Cardiff University societies to perform.
Last year saw the Union transformed into 9 unexplained rooms of ‘mystery and intrigue’, while the line-up included acts such as Afro Cluster, Back to Basskicks, Bmaits & Juma, and Cardiff University’s own big band.
