Cardiff Academic appointed to Florence Nightingale Foundation

A Cardiff University academic has been appointed to a new role in the Florence Nightingale Foundation, an organisation which aims to support midwives and nurses.  Dr Lesley Lowes has been granted the position within the research of Clinical Nursing Practise.

Dr Lowes, will now take the flagship position of Chair of the Clinical Nursing Practice Research, and is the first Florence Nightingale Professor to be appointed to this field within Wales.┬á As part of this role, Dr LowesÔÇÖ┬á will work on research to directly improve Clinical care; ultimately improving the treatment of patients.

Chief Executive of the Florence Nightingale Foundation, Professor Elizabeth Robb , said ÔÇ£We are delighted that Lesley has been appointed to this exciting new role. I believe that Florence Nightingale would be thrilled to see this appointment made, particularly at a leading university/health provider in Wales.ÔÇØ

The professional appointment was made in partnership with the Florence Nightingale Foundation, as well as Cardiff University School of Healthcare Sciences and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. Professor Sheila Hunt, Dean and Head of the School of Healthcare Sciences, said ÔÇ£We are delighted to appoint Lesley to this new role. She has always had a passion for clinical practice, working in a dual research and clinical post at the School.ÔÇØ

Dr Lowes has produced an extensive and progressive body of work during her time in academia, with research projects that cover; childhood diabetes, theories of grief, loss, adaptation and change, service usersÔÇÖ involvement in research and the experiences of children and young people with their parents in relation to healthcare.

This, however, is not the first recognition she has received for her work. In 2007, Dr Lowes was awarded the All Wales Outstanding Achievement Award for Nursing and Midwifery.

Dr Lowes expressed her excitement for her appointment in a statement. ÔÇ£ItÔÇÖs a tremendous opportunity to focus on improving care for patients. Following Florence NightingaleÔÇÖs example we need nurses to question practice, review and implement existing evidence into practice, and develop the evidence needed to deliver the highest quality care to patients.ÔÇØ
