Caerphilly has taught a lesson for the rest of the UK to learn – Reform UK may not\u00a0always be the unstoppable force that is\u00a0often portrayed right now in our politics.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

October\u2019s by-election, set at the southern end\u00a0of the Rhymney Valley, defied expectations and\u00a0polling that predicted a Reform UK win after\u00a0 a close race with Plaid Cymru. Instead, Plaid\u2019s\u00a0candidate Lindsay Whittle came out on top by\u00a0a considerable margin, garnering 47.4% of the vote, leaving Reform UK\u2019s Ll\u0177r Powell trailing\u00a0behind at 36% of the vote.<\/p>\n\n

Voters came out in their droves for this by-election. At 50.43%, it broke a record as the\u00a0highest turnout ever for a devolved by-election in Wales. Previously, the highest turnout in a\u00a0Senedd by-election didn\u2019t even break 50%,\u00a0totalling 45.2% in Blaenau Gwent nineteen years\u00a0ago.<\/p>\n\n

For Lindsay Whittle, the win was particularly\u00a0euphoric. After standing thirteen other times\u00a0in Caerphilly elections, it was fourteenth time\u00a0lucky. In his victory speech, he made light of the\u00a0situation: \u201cLadies and gentlemen, you will for give me, I\u2019m not used to speaking first in these\u00a0election counts.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

However, he balanced his elation with a\u00a0poignant tribute to the tragic circumstances\u00a0 which triggered this by-election: the sudden\u00a0death of the previous MS, Hefin David. He\u00a0continued: \u201c[Hefin] will be a hard act to follow. I\u00a0will never fill his shoes. But I promise you, I will\u00a0 walk the same path that he did. And I can pay no\u00a0finer tribute to an excellent man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Success for the Welsh nationalist party\u00a0demonstrates a progressive bloc of voters forming to keep Reform out, partly resulting from\u00a0tactical voting. The incentive to tactically vote\u00a0will reduce under the new proportional voting\u00a0system in next year\u2019s Senedd election, but the\u00a0result still positions Plaid as the leading force for\u00a0left-leaning voters to unite behind in 2026.<\/p>\n\n

Meanwhile, a ruinous night unfolded for\u00a0Reform. Despite confident beginnings with\u00a0senior figures like Nigel Farage and Zia Yusuf\u00a0 visiting on polling day, this began to dwindle\u00a0as time drew closer to the result. By the time of\u00a0the declaration, Reform supporters had largely\u00a0left the count, and their candidate Ll\u0177r Powell\u00a0refused to give a speech.<\/p>\n\n

Clearly, Reform was disappointed. After all,\u00a0substantial resources went into this by-election,\u00a0from visits by senior MPs, to their own Caerphilly headquarters set up on the town\u2019s high street.<\/p>\n\n

However, there is a silver lining for the party.\u00a036% of the vote is not insignificant, and similar\u00a0numbers in the Senedd election will see them\u00a0 win seats. Just like how Plaid has been positioned as a leading force, Reform have proved\u00a0themselves as the right-wing alternative. Their\u00a0real challenge will be combatting the progressive voting bloc, and finding parties open to a\u00a0coalition if they were to form a government next\u00a0 May.<\/p>\n\n

For the traditional stalwarts of UK politics,\u00a0the result was more predictable – and it was\u00a0as damning as expected. Labour\u2019s more than century-long dominance in Caerphilly came to a\u00a0crashing halt, attracting just 11% of voters, while\u00a0the Conservatives didn\u2019t even break double\u00a0digits, only managing 2%.<\/p>\n\n

These catastrophic results only reiterate the\u00a0electoral oblivion which awaits these parties in future elections. Welsh Labour\u2019s heartlands are\u00a0 no longer dependable – they\u2019ve become disillusioned with the party, as proven by approval\u00a0ratings which suggest that over half of Welsh\u00a0adults disapprove of their government.<\/p>\n\n

As work gets underway for Lindsay Whittle as the newly sworn-in Member of the Senedd for Caerphilly, so too does the work towards the\u00a0wider contest for the whole of Wales.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n
