On November 4th, 2025, Cardiff University Feminist Society, in collaboration with\u00a0 South Wales Women Against the Far\u00a0Right, ran an event. An event that had over 70 attendees from different\u00a0backgrounds, four passionate speak ers from different realms of activism\u00a0 and one shared goal: to fight the far\u00a0right.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

The event spoke about how in\u00a0recent years Reform UK, whilst\u00a0claiming to be the party of the British people, have created a party that fuels division, normalises prejudice, and erodes trust in democratic institutions. In the current social and\u00a0 political landscape it is more important than ever that public discourse\u00a0reflects empathy and evidence, not\u00a0fear and falsehoods.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

South Wales Women Against the\u00a0Far Right said that the aim of the recent event at Cardiff University was to have a \u201cdiscussion surrounding how to tackle misinformation\u00a0and ways to combat Reform UK in\u00a0our communities\u201d and share with CU\u00a0Feminist Society how to stay safe\u00a0around campus. The event was put\u00a0on by Iona Hamilton, President of Feminist Society, at Cardiff University and Suwaba Hussein, from\u00a0South Wales Women Against the Far\u00a0Right. The pair shared the sentiment\u00a0that \u201cwe must show love where the\u00a0 far right look to hate, and we must\u00a0show unity where the far right show\u00a0division\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

First speaker at the event was\u00a0Deity Evans, a trans rights activist who helped to organise the largest\u00a0Welsh protest for trans rights with\u00a0over 3,000 people in attendance.\u00a0 She shared that \u201cone identity cannot\u00a0be more important than others\u201d and the creation of \u201ctrans exclusion\u201d is\u00a0becoming more prominent with the\u00a0rise from the far right. Statistics show\u00a0that in Wales half of trans people have experienced a hate crime due\u00a0did not report. This hate is only\u00a0spiralling with the rise of the far\u00a0 right, with those higher up \u201cpulling\u00a0 the strings in the situation to build\u00a0transphobic rhetorics as a weapon of\u00a0 division\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThe ideas from the\u00a0 far right that white\u00a0 women and girls need\u00a0 protecting is rooted in\u00a0 the idea that women\u00a0 are less than in some\u00a0 way that is then used\u00a0 to rationalise racism,\u00a0islamophobia, homophobia, transphobia\u00a0 and anti-asylum\u00a0rhetoric\u201d.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Deity shared that she believes\u00a0these issues cannot be seen as sepa rate; they must be fought together to\u00a0 fight against far-right ideology.\u00a0Kavi Susee, anti-racism officer at\u00a0 Cardiff Students\u2019 Union attended the\u00a0 event as a member of a panel who\u00a0 shared her views on what students\u00a0can do to fight far-right ideology. In\u00a0her role at Cardiff Students\u2019 Union,\u00a0 she fights for the idea that it \u201chas\u00a0never been enough just to not be racist, but that we must be actively anti racist\u201d. She uses her platform to fight\u00a0against those who \u201ccontinue to be silent\u201d which she argues mirrors the far\u00a0right. Those in charge reap financial\u00a0rewards whilst they twist narratives\u00a0to blame immigrants instead of those\u00a0in power who can actually make\u00a0change. This attitude is rooted in the\u00a0far right\u2019s (informal) manifesto, and\u00a0Kavi encourages students to be loud\u00a0and never scared to speak out and get\u00a0 involved in activism.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

Co-host of the event Suwaba Hus sein, shared how we as students can\u00a0 fight against the overwhelming rise\u00a0 of Reform in all our communities,\u00a0 especially with a recent \u201cshocking\u00a0esculation of violence”.\u00a0With recent protests from Tommy Robinson, we can see how Reform\u00a0 is growing at unprecedented speeds.\u00a0The far right claim to be looking out\u00a0 for women and girls, but Suwaba\u00a0 said \u201cthey only mean when the victim is white and the perpetrator is\u00a0black or brown\u201d. Kate argued that the far right are using women to change narratives \u201cas a weapon for racism\u201d.\u00a0 This deeply racist rhetoric of asylum\u00a0seekers being violent demonstrates\u00a0 the true undertones of Reform UK.\u00a0 Suwaba shared the statistic that in the\u00a0 UK one woman is killed every week,\u00a0 but this is by someone they know,\u00a0often an intimate partner. Further,\u00a0asylum seekers get as little as \u00a39.95\u00a0 per week, costing the UK less per\u00a0 year than tax evasion, according to recent statistics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

Finally, to end the event panel,\u00a0 Pierce shared to those in attendance\u00a0that \u201cI, for one, do not need to be\u00a0protected, and I definitely do not\u00a0need to be protected by the far right.\u201d\u00a0 She argues the far right feeds on\u00a0 isolation: \u201cThey tell people \u2018No one\u00a0cares, nothing can change, so blame\u00a0 the powerless.\u2019 But we know better.\u201d\u00a0 Among the rest of the panel, Pierce\u00a0 stands for compassion and solidarity\u00a0 where we as a community need to\u00a0make sure Wales uses \u201cclassrooms, workplaces, and all of our voices to\u00a0 spread a different message: one of\u00a0 courage, compassion, and connection. Not one of hate\u201d. The panel\u00a0made sure the event was a reminder to everyone who attended to say \u201cnot in my community\u201d.<\/p>\n\n
