Just nine days into the year, pop superstar Bruno Mars confidently dropped a song that will likely end up being amongst 2026\u2019s best with \u2018I Just Might\u2019. Groovy, cheeky, and loads of fun, the single captured everything that makes Mars\u2019 previous output so iconic. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps it didn\u2019t light the world on fire in the way that 2010s hits \u2018Uptown Funk\u2019 (with Mark Ronson) or \u2018Just The Way You Are\u2019 did, but that\u2019s not for a lack of quality at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Mars again proved his status as one of the best in the business and set titanic expectations for his newest album, The Romantic. The question is: did he meet those expectations? Is this album pure 24-karat magic to listen to, or have we been locked out of the heaven that his usual work puts us in? Thankfully, it\u2019s the former.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Clocking in at 31-minutes and comprising nine tracks, including the second single \u2018Risk It All\u2019, The Romantic is filled-to-the-brim with the sensational singer-songwriter’s typical charisma and personality, with catchy choruses and cheesy-yet-ridiculously-charming lyrics.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of it is familiar, some of it is entirely new, and all of it is brilliant. Despite releasing the album at the end of winter, Mars clearly never lost the cheery summer vibes and is determined to share them with everyone else three months early; on that, he succeeds with flying colours.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u2018Grenade\u2019 singer maintains his biggest strength on this record\u2014that his beautiful vocals and rich instrumentation work in perfect harmony to create soundscapes that are nothing short of a joy to listen to.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

From the invigorating guitar solo on the penultimate track \u2018Nothing Left\u2019 to the gentle, romantic backdrop of opener \u2018Risk It All\u2019, Mars ensures that his already strong vocals are consistently complimented to create a final product that truly achieves greatness.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Certainly, some tracks are weaker than others\u2014 \u2019God Was Showing Off\u2019 feels less adventurous and is less memorable as a result\u2014but the highs are spectacularly high.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Alongside \u2018I Just Might\u2019, album track \u2018On My Soul\u2019 is undoubtedly one of the best songs of Mars\u2019 career. It\u2019s superbly exciting and utterly infectious, and one you\u2019ll be itching to replay again and again.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

In many ways, The Romantic feels like an evolution of Mars’ 70s-inspired soul-pop 2021 collaboration album with Anderson .Paak, An Evening with Silk Sonic, which is surely still amongst the best albums of the decade.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, \u2018Why You Wanna Fight?\u2019 invokes the silky-smooth sounds of \u2018Leave the Door Open\u2019, and standout track \u2018Cha Cha Cha\u2019 resembles the iconic song \u2018Skate\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

However, whilst you can do far worse than emulate such a phenomenal album, comparison ends up being the thief of joy here.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The greatest flaw of The Romantic is that it doesn\u2019t quite reach those towering heights. Particularly considering that this album marks Mars\u2019 return to solo work after Silk Sonic and his 2024 Lady Gaga collaboration \u2018Die With A Smile\u2019, it\u2019s unfair to expect anything as good as \u2018After Last Night\u2019 or \u2018Smokin Out The Window\u2019. Most artists would kill to make anything that good, after all.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, it\u2019s impossible not to be reminded of that seminal album and its best hits, and unfortunately, for as excellent as The Romantic is, it does feel like it ends up chasing highs that it never quite reaches.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t let that stop you from giving this album a listen, though. That The Romantic isn\u2019t Bruno Mars\u2019 best album is less indicative of this one\u2019s quality than his absurdly impressive artistic consistency.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re looking for something new to listen to, you\u2019d struggle to find better than this.<\/span><\/p>\n
