What\u2019s your favourite scary movie?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you tend to gravitate towards slasher films, tongue-in-cheek humour, and satirical storytelling, the Scream<\/em> franchise has undoubtedly made its way onto your radar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audiences, myself included, were drawn to the way the original film acted as a love letter to horror \u2014 filled with references and commentary on genre tropes, all while not taking itself too seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But beyond the meta-commentary, Scream<\/em> also worked because it was simply good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, seven films in, does that still hold true \u2014 or has it become too close to the very thing it once mocked?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Scream 7 faced controversy long before it hit screens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actress Melissa Barrera, a central figure and final girl in the previous two films, was removed from the project following her public support for Palestine \u2014 comments that Spyglass Media Group labelled antisemitic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The backlash was immediate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soon after, co-star Jenna Ortega also exited the film. Initially attributed to scheduling conflicts, she later confirmed in a 2025 interview with The Cut that Barrera\u2019s departure \u2014 along with the loss of the film\u2019s directors \u2014 played a major role in her decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

In response, Scream 7<\/em> leans heavily on nostalgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More so, arguably, than any instalment before it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its biggest draw is the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, absent from the sixth film, alongside Matthew Lillard reprising his role as Stu Macher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To the film\u2019s credit, both deliver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Campbell brings emotional weight to Sidney\u2019s trauma while retaining the strength that made her one of horror\u2019s defining final girls. Her role as a mother adds a new layer of vulnerability \u2014 one that sharpens the threat of Ghostface, a villain who remains terrifying without ever needing supernatural power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

But the film struggles to balance past and present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lillard\u2019s return is engaging, yet the attempt to merge that chaotic, old-school energy with modern elements \u2014 including FaceTime \u2014 creates a noticeable tonal clash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The use of AI and deepfakes is a compelling idea on paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On screen, however, moments like watching a frenzied killer pause to hit \u201cend call\u201d undercut the tension, pulling the audience out of the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The biggest issue comes with the reveal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than building towards something coherent, the film leans on red herrings and shock value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result feels less like a satisfying twist \u2014 and more like a misstep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

As a straightforward horror film, Scream 7<\/em> works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gore is plentiful. The kills are brutal \u2014 some of the most intense in the franchise. And the character dynamics are, for the most part, engaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as a Scream<\/em> film, it falters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps doomed from the outset, it relies too heavily on nostalgia and not enough on its own story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not a bad film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it comes dangerously close to feeling like a Stab<\/em> movie \u2014 an imitation of the very thing it once set out to critique.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
