{"id":12205,"date":"2017-04-30T14:28:28","date_gmt":"2017-04-30T13:28:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/?p=12205"},"modified":"2017-05-02T10:42:18","modified_gmt":"2017-05-02T09:42:18","slug":"review-romeo-juliet-wales-millennium-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/culture\/review-romeo-juliet-wales-millennium-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Romeo and Juliet, Wales Millennium Centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Romeo and Juliet, Thursday 27th April, Wales Millennium Centre, reviewer: Kirby Evans<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"m_4840135539674796867xparagraph\"><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">This is\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Shakespeare<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1reimagined.<\/span> Omidaze\u252c\u00e1theatre company combine aerial\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">cirrus<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1with iambic pentameter to create a stunning performance of a story that has been told a thousand times.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xeop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4840135539674796867xparagraph\"><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">T<\/span>he two-hour\u252c\u00e1<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">unseated<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1performance begins its dynamic\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">journey<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1in the foyer of the theatre, where audience members whisper and\u252c\u00e1<\/span>scour\u252c\u00e1the room\u252c\u00e1with\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">uncertainty<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1before the cast members appear\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">amongst<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1them. Once everyone is finally aware of what is happening, the audience are ushered into an\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">intimate<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1and dimly lit studio, decorated with aerial hoops and acrobatic silks.\u252c\u00e1<\/span>It feels elusive and\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">intriguing<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">. Each scene takes place in a different area of the room, creating a real sense of movement\u252c\u00e1<\/span>and progression as the play unravels. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">As a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1result of the layout of the room, the audience are required to move around the space according to which scene is taking place. There is\u252c\u00e1<\/span>something about\u252c\u00e1having the actors directing the audience that brings a sense of vulnerability to the show. It doesn&#8217;t feel like they are performing for an audience in a theatre, but more that they are guiding them through\u252c\u00e1the streets of\u252c\u00e1<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Verona<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">.\u252c\u00e1<\/span>To further this, as\u252c\u00e1the show progresses and audience members&#8217; feet tire, more and more members begin to sit on the floor to watch. Grownups sitting on the\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">floor<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1cross legged in public isn&#8217;t considered a social norm and as a result,\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">strengthens<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1that feeling of vulnerability, and\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">further<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1removes spectators from the real world,\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">enabling<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1each person to be\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">full<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">immersed<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1in the play.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xeop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1It&#8217;s pretty cool.<\/span><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4840135539674796867xparagraph\"><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The cast is small. With a grand total of six actors, it means each person plays multiple parts, but the minimalist costumes ensure that character changes\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">aren&#8217;t<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1a hassle, and there is no ambiguity as to who you are watching. The costumes, as mentioned are certainly minimal. All actors have beige clothes on and when in character will generally have one item of clothing on that\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">represents<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1who they are. One could consider it low budget, or in a more positive light it could be seen as stripped back\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Shakespeare<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">, removing any distractions to enable you to fully immerse yourself in the show. That being said, in contrast with this &#8216;<\/span>stripped back&#8217; outlook, there are two\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">actresses<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1spinning around in the air frequently\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">throughout<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1(slightly more distracting than Elizabethan wardrobe one could argue.)\u252c\u00e1<\/span> Granted aerial\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">acrobatics<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1must be outrageously difficult and tiring, let alone when they are expected to carry off\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">monologues<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1whilst most\u252c\u00e1<\/span>probably out of breath. However, given that only two women are ever in the air, and at seemingly random points, it almost feels\u252c\u00e1like an\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">afterthought.<\/span>\u252c\u00e1the<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1acrobatics, although incredible,\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xspellingerror\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">doesn&#8217;t<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1seem to<\/span>\u252c\u00e1bring an awful lot to the play.\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xeop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1It&#8217;s a great idea, and a novel one too, but maybe it needed to be a more central feature of the show.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4840135539674796867xparagraph\"><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xeop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">However, there is a moment that is brought to life with the aid of an aerial hoop. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The\u252c\u00e1<\/span>energy of one of Mercutio&#8217;s monologues is astounding, and enhanced with the acrobatics; it&#8217;s this scene where this adaptation really does work well. A Lot of credit goes to the two fantastic acrobats;\u252c\u00e1Gemma Creasey\u252c\u00e1and\u252c\u00e1Hannah O&#8217;Leary<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xeop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">, they put their heart and soul into their performances, and this really shines through during interactions between Benvolio and Mercutio. The other character that stands out, is the nurse, played by <\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Kayed Mohammed Mason<\/span>. When one is asked to recall a humorous character in Romeo and Juliet, for most readers of the play, Mercutio comes to mind, but the audience of this performance are guaranteed to say the Nurse. \u252c\u00e1Mason&#8217;s wit and cheek shine a light on a character that could easily have fallen into the background, whilst simultaneously lifting the atmosphere of a true tragedy. And a tragedy it is. The audience are certainly not quick to leave the room once the show has ended, most likely because they stand in awe as the lights come on and they try in vain to process the last two hours and come back down to earth.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4840135539674796867xparagraph\"><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Overall, an outstanding performance, although not breath-taking, whether you like Shakespeare or not, it&#8217;s not one to miss!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4840135539674796867xparagraph\"><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xeop\">\u252c\u00e1<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><b>Downfalls<\/b><\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">: A<\/span>chey back, feels low budget, slow to get started and not enough\u252c\u00e1aerobatics.\u252c\u00e1<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xeop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u252c\u00e1<\/span><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4840135539674796867xparagraph\"><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><b>Highlights<\/b><\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xnormaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">:<\/span>\u252c\u00e1I<\/span><span class=\"m_4840135539674796867xeop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">ncredible actors (Juliet&#8217;s tears will rip through you), laugh out loud moments, interesting use of props and it is certainly novel.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>by Kirby Evans<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Romeo and Juliet, Thursday 27th April, Wales Millennium Centre, reviewer: Kirby Evans This is\u252c\u00e1Shakespeare\u252c\u00e1reimagined.
