Whether it&#8217;s whilst you&#8217;re drastically hungover on the sofa, at a late-night takeaway or perhaps out somewhere slightly more cultured, bolting down a dangerous amount of carbohydrate is rarely an unenjoyable experience. And one evening, after a particularly miserable Cardiff afternoon, my partner and I were both up for shovelling some dough down ourselves. Conveniently, we&#8217;d taken note of a bougie looking pizza restaurant about 10 minutes away and quickly settled upon giving it a pop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/10\/dt-5-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19836\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1200\" \/><figcaption>The eye-catching facade of <em>The Dough Thrower<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Having opened in 2017 at the top of\nCowbridge Road East opposite Victoria Park, <em>The Dough Thrower<\/em> pizza\njoint has quickly made a name for itself. It recently featured in Wales\nOnline&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink-news\/best-restaurants-cardiff-2019-places-11890191\"><em>50 best\nrestaurants in Cardiff in 2019<\/em><\/a> and, since visiting, it&#8217;s easy to\nsee why. The venue disappointed in almost no aspect whatsoever.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> &#8220;You&#8217;ll also be entertained with the eponymous display of raw pizza bases being flung through the air&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Sit without a view of their open\nkitchen and you&#8217;ll be satisfactorily surrounded by a laid-back mixture of\nhipsterish contemporary and rustic styling. Sit as we did, however, with a view\nof the chefs and their humongous log fired pizza oven, and you&#8217;ll also be\nentertained with the eponymous display of raw pizza bases being flung through\nthe air. You&#8217;d be surprised how much the right kind of jeopardy can add to your\ndining experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/10\/dt-15-min-1024x838.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19851\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1200\" \/><figcaption>Pizza kitchen<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The menu itself is similarly\namusing, featuring quirkily named pizzas and animal themed sauces. There&#8217;s even\na <em>Benito&#8217;s Choice<\/em> section which, initially, I took as the Italian\nequivalent of when a Chinese in Swansea served me a plate of their <em>Chairman\nMao&#8217;s spicy chicken<\/em>. Turns out the owner is just named Benito and that,\nsince eating the chairman&#8217;s chicken, I can&#8217;t stop seeing dictators on the menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the choice of unconventionally\nnamed options, we decided to be a bit boring and begin with a \u252c\u00fa6.50 starter of\nmeatballs made from smoked Pancetta and a duo of minced pork and beef. There\nwas nothing boring about them, though: unctuous from the two minces and with a\nslight whiff of Pancetta smoke, they were covered with a sweet, tangy tomato\nsauce and a generous dusting of nutty Padano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/10\/dt-16-min-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19848\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1200\" \/><figcaption>Meatball starter<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We then waited 20 minutes or so for\nthe mains, ostensibly due to both a regular flow of takeaway orders and to a\ncouple of mixed up tickets. This was the only real issue we had during our\nvisit but, given that the longer we waited the more space we had for carbs, it\ndidn&#8217;t really bother us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> &#8220;They come out of the oven a heroic sight, with gargantuan crusts puffed up and still bubbling from the heat&#8221; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>When they did arrive, one <em>Jhonny&#8217;s<\/em>\n(Serrano ham, Rocket and grated Padano, \u252c\u00fa12.50) and one <em>Flaming Goat<\/em>\n(Roquito pepper, goat&#8217;s cheese and chilli honey, \u252c\u00fa12.50), all was forgotten.\nThe pizza is <strong>good<\/strong>. They come out of the oven a heroic sight, with\ngargantuan crusts puffed up and still bubbling from the heat. They then handily\nshrink down to size as they reach the table, revealing a liberal volume of\ntoppings. Their dough is light and slightly chewy, whilst the <em>fior de latte<\/em>\nmozzarella and the same zippy tomato sauce as above keep everything nice and\noozy. The <em>Flaming Goat<\/em> was particularly tasty. Creamy goat&#8217;s cheese and\na considered sweetness from the peppers and honey were an interesting combo on\na pizza and, contrary to its name, it was never uncomfortably spicy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/10\/dt-14-min-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19847\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1200\" \/><figcaption> <em>Flaming Goat<\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We both left requiring a takeaway\nbox. So, whilst not exactly student prices, the \u252c\u00fa31.50 that we spent ended up\nfeeding us for two meals. Not too bad in the grand scheme of things. If your\nbudget is tight though, consider either skipping starters or going for a\nstarter each and a pizza between two.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/10\/dt-9-min-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19844\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1200\" \/><figcaption>The leftovers!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve enough of your loan left for any of the options above, then, and enough willpower to get up Cowbridge Road in the rain, you should definitely give <em>The Dough Thrower <\/em>a visit. It does something really simple, really well: it takes unfussy food, executes it deftly and packages the whole experience within a lovely environment. But it also goes a bit further than that. You also get flaming goats on the menu, dangerous dough hurling and theatrically flamboyant crusts.
