The audience, reportedly freezing cold on that\nhistoric night, heard the premiere of the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, the\nFourth Piano Concerto and the \u00d4\u00c7\u00ffChoral Fantasy&#8217;. This was a behemoth\nundertaking, a four-hour-long performance of music written exclusively by the\nGerman genius. As a classical musician myself, I felt deeply excited to attend a\nrecreation of this momentous benefit concert at St. David&#8217;s Hall, Cardiff, a\nvery comfortable and nicely heated venue which, luckily, made history not quite\nrepeat itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event started with a pre-concert talk\nentitled: \u00d4\u00c7\u00ffBeethoven, Wine and the musical ideas behind the 1808 concert&#8217;.\nDespite having known Beethoven&#8217;s music since infancy, little did I know that he\nliked to compose while walking through the vineyards surrounding Vienna. I was also\nnot aware that the Fourth Piano Concerto, the Fifth Symphony and the \u00d4\u00c7\u00ffWaldstein&#8217;\nSonata all have embedded in them the song of the yellowhammer, a bird Beethoven\noften encountered on his daily walks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After these and many more enlightening details\nabout the composer, the concert began. The Sixth Symphony opened the first\nhalf, beautifully performed by the Welsh National Opera Orchestra. The\nconductor, Carlo Rizzi, splendidly illustrated the scenes of the \u00d4\u00c7\u00ffPastoral&#8217;,\nhis operatic background fitting the programmatic nature of this symphony\nextremely well. The soprano Alwyn Mellor, in the concert aria \u00d4\u00c7\u00ffAh! perfido&#8217;, displayed\na full range of powerful emotions, from passionate anger to suffering\ntenderness. Stephen Osborne&#8217;s performance of the Fourth Piano Concerto was technically\nmasterful and particularly impressed me with the boldness of its <em>pianissimos<\/em>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the second half, the BBC National Orchestra\nof Wales took the stage, conducted by Jaime Mart\u251c\u00a1n, and performed a mighty version\nof the Fifth Symphony. Mart\u251c\u00a1n had a fantastic energy that conveyed Beethoven&#8217;s\nspirit to the utmost.
