I was first introduced to Placebo by the\u252c\u00e1ever-dramatic\u252c\u00e11999\u252c\u00e1film\u252c\u00e1adaptation\u252c\u00e1of Pierre Choderlos de\u252c\u00e1Laclos’ 1782 novel\u252c\u00e1Les Liaisons\u252c\u00e1dangereuses<\/em>. Cruel Intentions<\/em>‘\u252c\u00e1opening scene streams\u252c\u00e1across a graveyard and then up to the iconic\u252c\u00e1New York\u252c\u00e1city skyline. Ryan Phillipe (swoon) is seen driving over\u252c\u00e1Brooklyn\u252c\u00e1Bridge in his\u252c\u00e1beautifully\u252c\u00e1recognisable\u252c\u00e1black\u252c\u00e1vintage\u252c\u00e1Jaguar XK140 – the car is as much a plot device as the\u252c\u00e1film’s\u252c\u00e1soundtrack, which of course begins with the blasting of Placebo’s\u252c\u00e1hit from the same year Every You Every Me<\/em>.\u252c\u00e1The scene was ranked by Screen Rant in 2019 as one of the\u252c\u00e1Top 10 Best Teen Movie Opening Scenes<\/strong>\u252c\u00e1and\u252c\u00e1furthermore, the song was ranked twenty years later as 83rd<\/sup>\u252c\u00e1on the hottest hits of all time by radio station Triple J.\u252c\u00e1\u252c\u00e1<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tonight, the atmosphere is once again hot, the lights on stage shimmer a low red as the crowd pack in for a show of unusual stature. Why? Because Placebo have done something\u252c\u00e1many artists would not attempt to do: they have placed a cap on the use of phones during the show. Sure, many artists such as Frank Turner and Florence and the Machine\u252c\u00e1ask fans to place their phones away for a couple of songs, to embrace the crowd, their\u252c\u00e1neighbors. But Placebo is approaching this in a different way, one that I eagerly welcome; they have released a statement\u252c\u00e1reminding fans NOT to use their phones because of the difficulty personal technology can create: \u00d4\u00c7\u00ffMore difficult to connect with you and to communicate effectively the emotions of the songs. Please be here and now in the present and enjoy the moment. Because this exact moment will never ever happen again.’ Placebo write that their purpose to\u252c\u00e1to\u252c\u00e1create \u00d4\u00c7\u00ffcommunication\u252c\u00e1and transcendence’\u252c\u00e1and I cannot help but agree that the use of phones does limit face-to-face communication. With the\u252c\u00e1performance\u252c\u00e1right in front of you, why do we find it so hard to live in the moment, and not behind a screen?\u252c\u00e1\u252c\u00e1<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The night\u252c\u00e1starts\u252c\u00e1with the Cruel Hearts Club. Maybe\u252c\u00e1it’s\u252c\u00e1just my desperate want to be\u252c\u00e1a 90s\u252c\u00e1Riot\u252c\u00e1grrrl, but\u252c\u00e1there’s\u252c\u00e1something about women on stage, carelessly rocking their hearts out that will always win me over. The unbridled talent in\u252c\u00e1painted pink fingernails\u252c\u00e1whizzing\u252c\u00e1along the\u252c\u00e1strings\u252c\u00e1of a\u252c\u00e1jet-black\u252c\u00e1guitar makes me soar.\u252c\u00e1Lead singer\u252c\u00e1Edie’s\u252c\u00e1voice is killer and instantly\u252c\u00e1recognisable, beautifully unique and,\u252c\u00e1in\u252c\u00e1some way,\u252c\u00e1glamorous.\u252c\u00e1However,\u252c\u00e1the most brilliant part of the\u252c\u00e1band’s\u252c\u00e1performance\u252c\u00e1is their back story, they\u252c\u00e1are breaking\u252c\u00e1unexpected\u252c\u00e1rules in an area many\u252c\u00e1rock and roll legends\u252c\u00e1have not spoken of.\u252c\u00e1The three are mothers by day, grunge band by night. My\u252c\u00e1favorite\u252c\u00e1bit of\u252c\u00e1titillation\u252c\u00e1about the trio is the story of drummer Gabi’s\u252c\u00e1thirteen-hour\u252c\u00e1bus journey to France\u252c\u00e1to introduce Sting whilst\u252c\u00e1heavily\u252c\u00e1pregnant. Sting became such a fan that night that he invited the band to be the opening act for his residency\u252c\u00e1at\u252c\u00e1the London Palladium\u252c\u00e1earlier this year. That is girl power.\u252c\u00e1<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a sad\u252c\u00e1reality\u252c\u00e1that when artists, like Placebo, have been in the spotlight for many decades, a set list composing of many new songs can\u252c\u00e1lose engagement with the crowd, a time to nip to the bar or have a quick\u252c\u00e1loo\u252c\u00e1break.\u252c\u00e1Placebo’s\u252c\u00e1enigmatic new soundtrack made it clear this was not an option.\u252c\u00e1There\u252c\u00e1was no moment\u252c\u00e1where the wave broke, the tidal sound system remained steadily high throughout. The\u252c\u00e1stage was set\u252c\u00e1with the\u252c\u00e1opening\u252c\u00e1hymn\u252c\u00e1of Forever Chemicals<\/em> filling the room, the lights lift slowly the water\u252c\u00e1rises\u252c\u00e1and the brilliance of Placebo is unveiled.\u252c\u00e1This song is classic Placebo, to a\u252c\u00e1modern-day\u252c\u00e1audience,\u252c\u00e1the use of the bare synths\u252c\u00e1allows\u252c\u00e1me to picture myself riding shotgun in\u252c\u00e1Ryan\u252c\u00e1Phillips’\u252c\u00e1Jag.\u252c\u00e1We are\u252c\u00e1then\u252c\u00e1engulfed\u252c\u00e1by a song you can’t help but sing from your lungs,\u252c\u00e1Beautiful James<\/em>.\u252c\u00e1The tone of Placebo’s music is truthful and raw, speaking of loneliness, of\u252c\u00e1addiction, of\u252c\u00e1fighting nihilistic\u252c\u00e1tendencies.\u252c\u00e1\u252c\u00e1<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The majority of\u252c\u00e1their music came from their new album Never Let Me Go<\/em>, their eighth studio album in 28 years. The album’s track placement is echoed in their set timings and it’s a love story to the lost art of album listings. The album proves to be\u252c\u00e1musically\u252c\u00e1multicultural\u252c\u00e1and\u252c\u00e1appreciative of\u252c\u00e1experimental\u252c\u00e1instrumentals forged with Placebo’s signature sound.\u252c\u00e1Twin Demons<\/em> showcases the\u252c\u00e1band’s\u252c\u00e1fabulous\u252c\u00e1guitar\u252c\u00e1talent. The elopement of guitar and lyrics in order to showcase a\u252c\u00e1battle against\u252c\u00e1one’s\u252c\u00e1own demons is reminiscent of Milton’s\u252c\u00e1Pandemonium<\/em>; the\u252c\u00e1allegories\u252c\u00e1for a sea inside every human provides blossoming poetic darkness.\u252c\u00e1Another personal\u252c\u00e1favourite\u252c\u00e1was Chemtrails<\/em>, a reminder that we can get warped by\u252c\u00e1society’s\u252c\u00e1constant skepticism\u252c\u00e1and\u252c\u00e1conspiracy’s, an ode to wanting more than day-to-day rantings and anger.\u252c\u00e1Lastly Placebo did\u252c\u00e1a series of covers, including what has arguably been the song of the year by a Ms. Kate Bush, a song they’ve been covering for twenty years – talk about being ahead of the curve. They\u252c\u00e1also took a moment to\u252c\u00e1take\u252c\u00e1a political stance in their cover of Tears for Fears’ Shout<\/em>, an artist that has obviously influenced\u252c\u00e1Placebo’s\u252c\u00e1sound. Comments on\u252c\u00e1environmental\u252c\u00e1rights\u252c\u00e1result in loud applause from the audience and it feels like I’m in a place where people\u252c\u00e1want for\u252c\u00e1something better, for us all.\u252c\u00e1<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My last note on the performance is that, as I conclude this review, I go on my phone to attach a photo I took of the performance, which I usually use as notes to write such articles. I had completely forgotten I hadn’t taken any notes, but the gig was so brilliant, so memorable and bold that just my memories were the perfect thing to take home.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
