By hosting engaging discussions and raising funds for PEN International, the club is committed to championing the right to read, write and share ideas. Krisha (President), Christine (Social Secretary), and Khalid (Reading Group Coordinator) discuss their insights and aspirations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What does the term \u2018literary freedom\u2019 mean to you, and why do you think it\u2019s so important today?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTo me, literary freedom is the right to access, create, and share stories without fear of censorship,\u201d explains Christine. \u201cWhile books are relatively protected in the UK, literary freedom is under threat globally. In an interconnected world, we can\u2019t ignore these issues. It\u2019s not just about protecting the right to read\u2014it\u2019s about safeguarding the exchange of ideas that fosters understanding, empathy, and progress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Krisha adds, \u201cIt\u2019s universally resonant. For readers, it broadens our understanding of the world; for writers, it\u2019s a platform for activism. Communities use literature to preserve their identities. Literature free from censorship connects us all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n How does Cardiff University Book Club promote literary freedom?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Christine outlines the club\u2019s inclusive ethos: \u201cWe\u2019re committed to creating spaces where diverse perspectives thrive. Our The Book Thief<\/em> reading group explores how censorship impacts society, and we offer groups across genres like sci-fi, classics, romance and translated fiction. These aren\u2019t just discussions\u2014they\u2019re conversations that celebrate diverse voices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Krisha adds, \u201cOur activities highlight the importance of access to uncensored literature. With this fundraiser for PEN International, we aim to amplify global challenges and inspire action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Khalid explains another initiative: \u201cWe also run a \u2018Translated Fiction\u2019 group to introduce members to literature beyond a Western perspective. These discussions broaden horizons and challenge biases.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n What inspired the fundraiser, and how does it tie into the club’s mission?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Christine reflects, \u201cThe decision came from recognising that literary freedom is under attack worldwide. Viral discussions on platforms like TikTok show books about race, gender, and oppression being dismissed as \u2018too political\u2019 or banned outright. Books have always been political. They challenge us, and discomfort isn\u2019t something to fear\u2014it\u2019s something to learn from.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Khalid adds, \u201cWe\u2019re also shining a light on those unable to engage with literature due to oppression, like Egyptian poet Galal El-Behairy, who\u2019s been imprisoned for his work. His story reminds us of the stakes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n What role do you think university groups like yours play in defending literary freedom?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cUniversities are incredibly diverse. For many, this is the first time they\u2019ve encountered such variety in ideas and experiences. Our club creates a space where members can learn from one another and explore unfamiliar perspectives.” Khalid explains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Krisha emphasises, \u201cOur role goes beyond Cardiff. We aim to inspire students to champion these values globally. This fundraiser is one step towards creating a culture of advocacy and inclusivity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n What lasting impact do you hope this fundraiser will have?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Krisha concludes, \u201cWe hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for the privilege of literary freedom in the UK and create a culture that champions inclusivity and advocacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cUltimately, we want our Book Club to remain a space where diverse literature is celebrated and censorship is actively opposed.” Christine adds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cLiterature connects us. To inhibit or destroy it is to destroy a piece of humanity.
