It took Ash just two years to go from Downpatrick community halls to the history books. Signed at Seventeen in 1994, the legendary rock trio became the youngest Glastonbury headliners to date. But defining the sound of the nineties came with its own pressures. On Sunday the16th of November, the Northern Irish band continued their legacy, returning to Swansea for a highly anticipated show at Sin City, where I caught up with drummer Rick \u201cRock\u201d McMurray and frontman Tim Wheeler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even three decades later, their greatest moments sound like pure rock chaos. Speaking about that record-breaking Glastonbury slot, Wheeler recalls the thrill of being a last-minute headliner: \u201cIt was being in the right place, right time.\u201d The moment Eavis asked them to fill in for Steve Winwood, who was unable to get on site with the apocalyptic weather, was unforgettable: \u201cWe got back to our tour bus and had a knock on the door, asking, \u2018Can you headline tomorrow night?\u2019\u201d. Headlining beside The Prodigy and Radiohead, while being only nineteen years old, Ash remembers the experience as \u201csort of a magical thing\u201d as though a crowd of that size \u201cbecomes a sea\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the cult-like reaction to their debut album, 1977<\/em>, Ash was thrust into the limelight, where the pressure quickly became overwhelming; \u201cI think we were quite burnt out, because we weren\u2019t prepared for how much touring 1977<\/em> would bring\u201d, says McMurray. With many of their contemporaries being dropped by labels at the time, Ash was aware \u201cthat could be us\u201d, marking an era that forged their resilience: \u201cif that was going to happen, then let\u2019s go out at the top of our game\u201d. They instead redirected focus on \u201ctaking control of our identity\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPost 1977, there was a lot of record label pressure. Where\u2019s the next album?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Approaching the controversial reaction to their sophomore album Nuclear Sounds<\/em>, McMurray reveals, \u201cwe were being marketed in a very mainstream way\u201d during the Britpop era. The album is a clapback to \u201cjust put that idea to bed\u201d. Though the trio have no regrets with how they dealt with the \u201cdownward dip\u201d as it \u201cgave us a lot of resilience\u201d, contributing to making Ash who they are today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of Girl from Mars<\/em>, which McMurray notes inspired the title of their new album Ad Astra<\/em>, a translation of \u201cto the stars\u201d. The number one hit was undeniably the loudest song of the night, closely tied with their cover of Jump in the Line<\/em>. I hadn\u2019t known what to expect from an Ash audience, but the reaction was immediate: this was a crowd of die-hards. The passion and loyalty radiating from the long-term fans was an infectious force that drove the entire night. My personal favourite of the night was Burn Baby Burn<\/em>, a track from their album Free All Angels<\/em>: the eruption from the crowd felt inevitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three decades in, Ash is still hungry to prove themselves. Not letting themselves be defined by the nineties, their sound continues to evolve: \u201cdoesn\u2019t matter how long you\u2019ve been doing it, you\u2019re still learning\u201d. They haven\u2019t reached their idea of success until they \u201cdie on stage\u201d. Despite their three-decade-long journey, Ash is still secretly striving \u201cfor a freak hit\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked for advice to young musicians trying to forge their way into the industry, Wheeler suggests that \u201cyou have to be ready to adapt\u201d, emphasising the importance of \u201cbeing good live\u201d. McMurray knows \u201cIt\u2019s a different world to what it was back in the nineties,\u201d but his DIY spirit remains: he encourages young bands to \u201cgo to a pawn shop\u201d; for inspiration and not take small venues for granted: \u201cthey\u2019re massively important to the future of the industry\u201d. Their advice is simple: \u201cChallenge yourself, you\u2019ll surprise yourself constantly\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
