Centring on an affair between Tom Cullen (<em>House of the Dragon<\/em>, <em>Downton Abbey<\/em>) as older teacher Barry and Joe Locke (<em>Heartstopper<\/em>, <em>Agatha All Along<\/em>) as 18-year-old student Jasper, the darkness is always on display. When Jasper goes missing during their secret boat trip together, Barry scrambles to cover up his own involvement while trying desperately to find out what happened to the boy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s amazing to think about how much the whole film could fall apart in the hands of a lesser actor. Then, it\u2019s a testament to Tom Cullen\u2019s ability that it thrives so well. Jones\u2019s screenplay portrays Barry as predatory and cowardly, knowingly engaging inappropriately with a young student. Rather than revealing information that could save the boy, he always attempts to retain his own reputation. However, drawing on Mads Mikkelsen in <em>The Hunt<\/em>, Cullen manages to walk the seemingly impossible tightrope. He admirably maintains the push-and-pull of audiences rooting for and against Barry, while finding the depth in a character that could have so easily felt shallow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/10\/Tom-Cullen-Red-Carpet.jpeg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"584\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/10\/Tom-Cullen-Red-Carpet-584x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/10\/Tom-Cullen-Red-Carpet-584x1024.jpeg 584w, https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/10\/Tom-Cullen-Red-Carpet-171x300.jpeg 171w, https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/10\/Tom-Cullen-Red-Carpet-768x1347.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/10\/Tom-Cullen-Red-Carpet-876x1536.jpeg 876w, https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/10\/Tom-Cullen-Red-Carpet.jpeg 1168w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joe Locke\u2019s standout performance as Jasper, \u201ca character with a lot more layers,\u201d marks a \u201cvery much darker role\u201d for the actor, he said in an interview with Quench and CUTV. It\u2019s easy to see what he means; the sassy, self-assured student we see from the start is recontextualised repeatedly as new truths are unveiled. It\u2019s a bold, brave turn, a stark departure from characters like Charlie Spring or Billy Maximoff. Locke appreciates the opportunity to represent the LGBTQIA+ community in \u201cso many different ways,\u201d though. \u201cI love being a queer person and I love telling queer stories,\u201d he told Cardiff Student Media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While <em>Black Church Bay<\/em> is deeply disturbing, it is also distinctly Welsh, stunningly shot on location in Anglesey. Jones and cinematographer Lasse Ulvedal Tolb\u00f8ll always find opportunities to gaze into characters\u2019 psychologies and the gorgeous landscapes surrounding them. The film is a must-see&nbsp;on the big screen for the sheer immersion and tension the visuals generate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That Welsh flavour is something Cullen is incredibly enthusiastic about. \u201cI\u2019m immensely proud of being Welsh,\u201d he told CUTV and Quench. \u201cAll I want to do is put Welsh stories on the screen and highlight how beautiful, diverse, and magic Wales is. The Ely-born-and-raised actor explained how her accent was not as recognisably Welsh as more traditional, \u201clyrical\u201d variants. Consequently, casting companies asked her to alter or drop it entirely for \u201cthe first couple decades of [her] career.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s taken all this time,\u201d she continued, but&nbsp;she\u2019s recently had more chances to&nbsp;finally get to share her natural accent on screen. Ayola was particularly happy about getting to do so in Netflix\u2019s <em>Kaos<\/em>, where she starred as the Greek goddess Persephone. She starred alongside her on-screen husband David Thewlis, who also adopted his own accent for his role. It&#8217;s a decision that delighted many viewers; the Screen Nation Awards nominee told us how so many people have said, \u201cit was so lovely to hear that accent,\u201d adding that she was \u201cvery grateful\u201d to&nbsp;showcase herself more accurately. This increased opportunity for self-expression&nbsp;is certainly welcome in <em>Black Church Bay<\/em>. He cites his experience making them as reason for the success of his newest venture. \u201cThere\u2019s quite a lot of stuff from those in this,\u201d he told Cardiff Student Media, comparing the shorts to \u201ctest runs\u201d which helped him \u201cfigure things out.\u201d However, despite making a big jump to feature-filmmaking, the move&nbsp;came naturally to Jones. It felt right for this idea, which has \u201cstayed with him\u201d since first coming up with it in 2019. \u201cWhy do you fall in love with someone? It\u2019s almost indescribable.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The film itself is an admirable exercise in tension and restraint. It\u2019s&nbsp;both an exciting, engaging watch and a strong sign that his sensibilities suit his upcoming project idea perfectly. Thrilling and thoughtful, the film will keep you engaged for the entire runtime and thinking long after the credits roll.
