It is a Friday night and rain is coming down hard. Still, a line of people has collected outside Clwb Ifor Bach, braving the bitter Welsh weather. They are here to see rock-infused reggae band Captain Accident, debuting their brand-new album Sayonara Paranoia in their hometown of Cardiff.

Once inside, excited chatter fills the bar and there is an air of familiarity among the crowd. One tall man at the bar dons a sweater that says: ‘Ska is the Bollocks”. This audience knows exactly what they are here to see.

As the sounds of electric guitar slowly start filling the club, the crowd surges forward and people crane their necks to make out the silhouettes moving on stage. Captain Accident cracks into their new single and album opener Slither. The song is full-on and the 6 piece band fills the stage with persona, rhythm and a lot of fedoras. Each member proudly showcases their skill at playing their instrument without one overtaking the other; their sound remains balanced.

This sound, marked by its Ska inspired quick rhythm and bouncing melodies, is undeniably infectious. Its easy attitude fills the room with joy, as the band plays track after track. Just as this easiness threatens to border on repetitive, new music is presented that blends the reggae with twists of rock. The song Rise & Fall starts off as a typical reggae melody, but transforms into something more dramatic as a sweeping guitar line is added. Their song Chains, also off their new album, is almost reminiscent of a classic rock ballad in its surprising romantic lyrics and raw vocals. This mixing of genres within songs is audacious, but pays off as the band elevates their music without losing their initial appeal.

Even though their genre mixing is exciting, it is not the central point of the gig. Because as Captain Accident balances between rock and reggae, their audience remains steady in their enthusiasm. As a woman takes of her shoes to dance more freely, someone twirls past her seemingly entranced by the music. A man covered in tattoos and wearing a “Love music hate racism” shirt sways side to side and the owner of the “Ska is the Bollocks” sweater has disappeared into the movement of the crowd. This is the standout theme of the evening; Captain Accident not only provides music to groove to but also a community of people that are open to be moved by it.

Here, where the reggae beat and rock guitars fill up the room, is a space for everyone. The invitation to bob your head to Captain Accident is undeniable and there is a good chance that most people here tonight, will show up at their next concert as well, and I will probably too.
