Before my visit to The Clink, the phrase \u00d4\u00c7\u00ffprison food&#8217; brought to mind visions of mushy, boiled cafeteria chow. But thanks to this surprising new prison charity project, my preconceptions have been shattered.<\/p>\n<p>The Clink\u252c\u00e1serves up a wonderful lunch experience by any standard; all of it cooked and served by the inmates of Cardiff prison.\u252c\u00e1The idea is to tackle the problem of re-offending as a startling 49% of\u252c\u00e1prisoners\u252c\u00e1released in the UK re-offending within a\u252c\u00e1year. The charity provides a fantastic opportunity for lower-level inmates to gain vital experience and qualifications to lessen their chances of re-entering prison. Select inmates are trained in food\u252c\u00e1preparation, cleaning and food service and work with the aim to<i>\u252c\u00e1<\/i>find<i> <\/i>full-time employment within the hospitality sector upon their release. Aside from the small piece of star anise in the terrine that I crunched into &#8211; it was an extremely satisfying starter which I feel could only be improved by scrapping the limp side salad.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6614\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6614\" style=\"width: 917px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/09\/main-at-the-clink.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6614\" alt=\"the lamb main course at the clink restaurant\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/09\/main-at-the-clink.jpg\" width=\"917\" height=\"687\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/09\/main-at-the-clink.jpg 917w, https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/09\/main-at-the-clink-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/quench\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/09\/main-at-the-clink-700x524.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 917px) 100vw, 917px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6614\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Verity Ball<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I opted for the lamb which was excellently cooked with a\u252c\u00e1deep lamb and succulent flavour. The best thing on the plate was the garlic and potato rosti which added a\u252c\u00e1welcomed sweetness\u252c\u00e1to the dish. Making up the trio was a luscious rhubarb-stewed\u252c\u00e1<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">cr\u251c\u00bfme br\u251c\u2557l\u251c\u00aee, a rice pudding with deep fried rhubarb strips and a scoop of rhubarb ice-cream with caramel. The texture and flavour of the<\/span>\u252c\u00e1rice pudding and the\u252c\u00e1cr\u251c\u00bfme br\u251c\u2557l\u251c\u00aee was spot on. The cherry coulis had a\u252c\u00e1beautiful sheen and sharpness that worked well with the richness and bitterness of the chocolate. But once more however, the ice-cream failed to deliver as it offered no distinct pistachio flavour.<\/p>\n<p>The food was really quite tasty and despite the unique circumstance; the\u252c\u00e1ambiance\u252c\u00e1was relaxed, the waitstaff were helpful and the restaurant was a pleasant place to\u252c\u00e1spend a long lunch.\u252c\u00e1Three courses and a soft drink came to less than \u252c\u00fa30 which is great value for money when considering the quality of the food.\u252c\u00e1As well\u252c\u00e1being a worthwhile cause the restaurant produced\u252c\u00e1some of the best food I have eaten in Cardiff without breaking the bank.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Whoever thought lunch-behind-bars could be so good?
