University is biggest expenditure for parents

New figures have shown that university expenses have eclipsed wedding expenses as the main financial concern for parents. In two out of five families, parents are helping their kids handle their higher education expenses. With an average student debt of £39,000, it has become difficult for students not to rely on their parents.

The increasing cost of higher education and the growing numbers of students applying to higher education in the past few decades are certainly the main reasons for this emerging trend.

Tuition fees have become less affordable since they were tripled by David CameronÔÇÖs government in 2010, causing students to run up debts that they will have to pay back for years after they graduate. As a result, the number of British applicants to universities has decreased by 4.8 per cent.

Huw Lewis AM, Welsh Education Minister, speaking at Cardiff University said that a Higher Education review should be expected for 2016.┬á He said ÔÇ£WeÔÇÖve put in place what we believe is the most equitable student finance system weÔÇÖve ever had in Wales. ItÔÇÖs our firm belief that access to higher education should be on the basis of the individualÔÇÖs potential to benefit, and not on the basis of what they can afford to pay.ÔÇØ

A cut in tuition fees would enable wider access to higher education and more equal opportunities for British students.
