Meta promoted one of the key features of this new platform, ÔÇÿHorizon HomeÔÇÖ, as part of a recent conference. As the┬áÔÇ£home┬ábase for the metaverseÔÇØ, people will be able to┬áuse┬áthis virtual space┬áto┬ácreate and interact with each other┬áfrom anywhere in the world. This┬áfeature┬áhas┬áalso┬ábeen┬áannounced to be coming to┬áthe┬áÔÇÿMessengerÔÇÖ app.┬á┬á
The concept of┬áthe ÔÇÿmetaverseÔÇÖ┬áwas first coined by Neal Stephenson back in 1992, referring to a space where┬ácomputer-generated simulations┬áand┬áreality┬áare merged┬átogether.┬áThis idea was later popularised in Ernest ClineÔÇÖs┬áReady Player One,┬áa science fiction that was adapted┬áto film by Stephen Spielberg in 2018.┬á┬á┬á
Several other Silicon Valley-based companies are also planning to develop their own ÔÇÿmetaversesÔÇÖ; specifically, Microsoft, Amazon, and even the online game platform Roblox are reported to be working on┬áa┬áspaces┬áwhere┬áÔÇ£people can come together within millions of 3D experiences to learn, work, play, create and socialize.ÔÇØ┬á┬á
Whilst┬áZuckerberg┬ámaintains that the ÔÇÿMetaverseÔÇÖ will bring people closer┬átogether┬áthan ever before,┬ásome┬ácritics have┬ásuggested that this recent announcement merely acts a distraction from┬áa number of┬ácontroversies┬áfacing the company.┬á┬áThe┬ámost significant of which is the┬áongoing┬áso-called ÔÇÿFacebook┬áPapersÔÇÖ scandal, a┬áseries of in-depth reports conducted by the Wall Street Journal┬áwhich┬áallege┬áthat the company┬áchose not to act on the knowledge that its products were┬ácontributing towards worldwide violence and contributing to mental health issues┬áÔÇô Meta┬áhas previously┬ádenied the validity of┬áthese claims.┬á┬á

As a new platform that┬áMeta claims will be┬áÔÇ£the next frontier in connecting peopleÔÇØ,┬áthe continued rise of┬ávirtual reality and┬áthe ÔÇÿMetaverseÔÇÖ┬áwill undoubtedly┬áhave an impact on our day-to-day lives┬áover the next decade.┬á┬á
