Cardiff student named ÔÇÿStudent of the YearÔÇÖ at OPTOM awards

Jason Searle, who is currently in his third year, won the award for giving back to the profession by ÔÇ£helping to spread enthusiasmÔÇØ about Optometry.

After creating his own website detailing life as an Optometry student, Jason was headhunted by the AOP and now writes a regular student blog for their website.

Professor Wess, Head of the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences said that ÔÇ£his blog has been of great support to fellow students. It is students like Jason who contribute to our reputation for excellence.”

He added that the School is ÔÇ£very proudÔÇØ of JasonÔÇÖs achievement and that he ÔÇ£is an outstanding student, very committed to the course and never misses an opportunity to get involved in additional activities within the school and our partner charities, such as Vision OverseasÔÇØ.

Speaking after the annual award ceremony at the Birmingham Hilton Hotel, the Chairman for the AOP, David Shannon, said they are ÔÇ£proud to be celebrating the achievements of those people and organisations that give so much to the profession and sector.ÔÇØ

Jason also now has a twitter account (@optomstudent) to keep fellow students across the UK updated about what he is currently studying.

He said ÔÇ£I just hope that I manage to spread interest and enthusiasm that helps to keep people motivatedÔÇØ and added that he feels ÔÇ£very humbleÔÇØ to win this award.
