TIP-OFF: Law netball social secretary Beth Atkins spoke with SportÔÇÖs Zoe Hunt following the opening IMG fixtures

With new training regimes, talented freshers and a competitive spirit, the season ahead looks strong for Law netball.

Both teams won their opening fixtures of the campaign having finished in the top three of their respective leagues last season, and Atkins is confident that further success can follow in this campaign.

How has your pre-season gone? Have you had good interest from freshers?

Pre-season has been really good. Both captains are enthusiastic and have introduced new training techniques to improve our fitness, which is definitely needed after a long summer of fun. The standard of Law netball is quite high, so we were worried that we wouldnÔÇÖt have enough interest, but weÔÇÖve had a lot of freshers sign up and the team looks like itÔÇÖs going to maintain the high standards set in previous years.

How would you describe the ethos of Law netball?

Relaxed, but also quite competitive. We donÔÇÖt just mess around and the teams definitely manage to strike a good balance between fun and taking training and matches seriously. The diversity of Law netball is great, too. Although the vast majority do Law, there are lots of players from other subjects, which means that itÔÇÖs a great way to meet people from other courses who you maybe wouldnÔÇÖt have met otherwise.

How did the first round of fixtures go?

Both Law sides had hard-fought victories. Law A narrowly edged out SOCSI ÔÇô it was a very tense match. Law B played Journalism and only secured their win close to the end, so that was another exciting game. EveryoneÔÇÖs happy and feeling good about the upcoming season. ItÔÇÖs early on, but last season was really fun and this season feels like itÔÇÖs going to be, too.

Do you think netball has enough coverage in the media?

ItÔÇÖs definitely well known within the University, but on a wider scale not so much. This is especially true in comparison to places like New Zealand, where netball is massive and watched a lot more.

Do you think the lack of coverage is indicative of gender inequality within the sporting world?

I guess it is in a way. If you look at football, then thereÔÇÖs no doubt that menÔÇÖs football is much more publicised than the womenÔÇÖs game, but then it depends on what youÔÇÖre interested in watching. Personally, I do prefer menÔÇÖs football and I know a lot of people do, so, in a way, the media is just tailoring their coverage to the demands of their target audience.

How do you rate the organisation of IMG Netball?

ItÔÇÖs really well run, very straightforward and everyone I know who plays in IMG really enjoys playing in the leagues.
