RAG make the trek of a lifetime

Two weeks ago, RAG (the Raise and Give society at Cardiff University) revealed their plans to climb Killimanjaro in aid of the Meningitis Research Foundation. Last week, RAG also announced they have again teamed up with Student Adventures for an incredible 16 day trip to Peru, to trek along the Lares Valley to Machu Piccu from 31st August to 16th September 2014..

The group will fly into Cuzco, the old capital of the ancient Inca Empire steeped in history located in the Southern Sierras. They will be given a few days to acclimatise to the altitude, but the trek will begin in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Along the way, the volunteers will eventually reach over 4500 meters about sea level in the Andes Fold Mountains, eventually trekking into the Lares Valley to bathe in hot springs and spend time with locals in the villages they will be staying in. The beautiful surroundings will make the physical challenges of altitude sickness entirely worthwhile.

The volunteers will eventually make their way towards Machu Piccu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) 2430 meters above sea level. Also known as ‘the Lost City of the Incas’, the amazing location will be the final stop of the Inca trail trek and an emotional reward for the hard work the group will put in over the 16 days.

The work for the trek in fact starts well before the volunteers take off for Peru next summer. The students will take to the Andes Mountains in aid of the Epilepsy Society and the Breast Cancer Campaign.  The Epilepsy Society campaign to make sure the voice of people with epilepsy is heard, as well as undertaking research to give sufferers the best support possible. The money raised for the Breast Cancer Campaign will fund world-class research to help eventually find a cure to help the millions of men and women who suffer from breast cancer worldwide. The sheer determination and kindness of the volunteers taking part of this incredible trek will undoubtedly bring about change for the better.
