TEAM TALK

Sport writer Dominic Booth puts Momed FC captain Lawrence Alldritt and vice-captain Sam Miller under the microscope

Momed, formerly a faculty side of Molecular Medicine (no longer a course run by Cardiff University) opened their Phase Two campaign with a 1-1 draw with C-PLAN last week.

Lawrence Alldritt’s side got through a tough group in Phase One and find themselves alongside IMG giants CARBS, Medics and Engin Loco in the Premier League of IMG’s Phase Two. Momed won three, drew two and lost one last semester and are still searching for consistency, as they look to hold their own in a tough few months to come.

How has the season gone so far?

LA: It’s been up and down – we’ve been quite inconsistent.

SM: We managed to make it into the Premier League, eventually, thanks to Chemistry beating Inter Menan in the final game, but a couple of draws against OPSOC and Law A were disappointing, as we should have won both those games.

Any players that have been standing out this year?

SM: Jon Clements and Kai Gilbert – they have started every game and become mainstays of the team. They have been integral to everything we have done this season. Our team has been fairly solid as we have a lot of players with IMG experience, people in their final year coming back from placements and helping the team out.

LA: We should also give a mention to Dan Beck who has been the only fresher to come into the team. He’s done really well.

What was your best team performance in the first half of the season?

LA: We had a great game against Inter Menan, which finished with a 2-1 victory. It was a really close, competitive game, which we were able to cling onto at the end. Although we lost 5-3 to last year’s champions CARBS, we gave them a scare in that game and, as we all know, they are a very strong team.

With the restart of IMG football being plagued by rain and postponed matches, is there any solution to this problem?

SM: A lot of people are suggesting that games could be played on the AstroTurf at Talybont, but that would mean 60 minute games, which would skew goal difference. That should only be used as a last resort in my opinion ├▒ where possible we should try and play all of the games on grass. The pitches at Trelai are often better maintained, so if we have to go there and play, then so be it.

LA: I think if the facilities are available, we should try and use them. You can’t do anything about the weather unfortunately.

Have you noticed abuse of any kind in IMG? Is that a problem that needs to be addressed?

LA: No, not really, there isnít too much confrontation that I have noticed. People realise that it is just IMG football and there should be no reason for abuse or violence of any kind. The games we have played have been played in a good spirit.

SM: In previous years, I have been involved in games that have had an ‘edge’ to them, if you like, but there has not been so much this year.┬á I think people mostly just get on with the game in hand.

What is the goal for your team in Phase Two?

LA: I think aiming to win the whole competition would be ambitious as there are a lot of strong sides in the top league but we would be happy to finish mid-table. If we play to our potential every week, there’s no reason at all why we can’t do well and challenge at the top of the table.

SM: Obviously, we’ll try and finish as high as possible but CARBS have to be the favourites to win the overall competition.
