University thirds battle to netball play-off win

University 3rd VII ..... 40

Medics 1st VII …….ÔǪ..ÔǪ..ÔǪ… 19┬á

The play-off between Cardiff University Netball 3rd VII and the Medics 1st VII had been long anticipated throughout the season and tensions were running high in the build-up to kick off last Wednesday.

With the Medics winning the toss, they took first centre. The thirds immediately got the turnover and took the first goal.

The Medics immediately fought back and got the next turnover and took the second goal. This gritty battle continued and took the score to 4-4. The amount of illegal contact by both sides throughout the game showed how much both teams wanted the win.

At the end of the first quarter, the game was still relatively tight, although the University had built a slight lead. With a player-of-the-match performance from Izzy Austin at goal-shooter, the University were able to convert almost all the ball they had into a goal, leaving them comfortably in front after half time.

Changes were made at half time by both teams in the hope that fresh legs would change the pace of the game.

Despite some great efforts by the Medics, especially their shooting duo, the University stood strong and were able to withstand the pressure from their opponents. Goalkeeper Poppy Compton won many vital interceptions for the University, ensuring that they held a 13-goal lead at the end of the third quarter.

Although neither team played the best game, it was a gritty fight for all involved. Despite their best efforts, the Medics were unable to break through the strong defence of the University, who eventually won the match 40-19, meaning that they are able to keep their place in the BUCS Western Conference 2B league.

The final score did not justify how well the Medics played, but this result means that their first team will now slot into Western 3B for next seasonÔÇÖs BUCS campaign.
