Act One productions announced

Act One is one of the UnionÔÇÖs busiest and biggest societies, staging six main productions annually (along with as many smaller productions as we can fit in!). We have something for everyone from the infamous student pantomime, to a ÔÇÿMad MenÔÇÖ-esque interpretation of Shakespeare. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved, just ÔÇÿlikeÔÇÖ our Facebook page, ÔÇÿAct One Drama SocietyÔÇÖ. If you want to find out a little bit more about what we are staging in 2013/14, read on!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: 2nd-3rd December, Solus

When the beautiful student and housewife-in-waiting Snow White is caught in the middle of a Swansea plan for world domination, she is banished to the strange land of Engineering. With the help of seven proud ÔÇÿdwarvesÔÇÖ, Snow and friends race against the clock to stop the evil NarcissaÔÇÖs plans and finds true love along the way. With tongue in cheek riffs on ÔÇÿgeek humourÔÇÖ, dirty jokes and original songs, this student penned pantomime is as filthy as it is ridiculous!

The Taming of the Shrew: 11th-15th February, YMCA

Baptista Minola, the CEO of Padua Ltd, is hounded by suitors asking for the hand of his youngest daughter, Bianca. However, Baptista refuses to give Bianca away until his older daughter, Katherina, has been married. KatherinaÔÇÖs temper and wicked tongue do not make her a tempting bride, so BiancaÔÇÖs suitors enlist the help of travelling salesman Petruchio. ShakespeareÔÇÖs The Taming of the Shrew is adapted into a 1960s office space; a corporate world where men make the rules and women struggle to fit at all.

Arcadia: 26th February- 1st March, Llanover Hall

Arcadia, set in one room in aristocratic Sidley Park, weaves stories from two different centuries together through intersecting themes and webs of sexual attraction. As two sparring academics try to find out what happened in the house during a visit by Lord Byron in 1809, the true story of the Regency occupants unfolds alongside their modern counterparts. StoppardÔÇÖs amusing play explores the natures of truth and time, the difference between the Classical and Romantic temperament and the disruptive influence of sex on our lives.

Jack of Hearts: 11th-15th March, YMCA

An original play set in the liquor-fuelled age of 1950s America follows Joey Marks, who walked into the city of Carmen with nothing but a name nobody knew and $20,000 for a past. Two years later heÔÇÖs the proprietor of the popular cafe-casino, the Jack of Hearts, and still a curiosity to Franky DeLore, the gangster overlord of Carmen. Caught between politicians, a headstrong showgirl, the FBI and an obscure drifter, Joey finds himself in a chain of events filled with split loyalties and questions about the true power of names.

Little Shop of Horrors: 25th-29th March, YMCA

The cult musical tells the story of Seymour, a timid and nerdy sales clerk working at Mr. Mushniks Skid Row Florists. Seymours luck turns around after he discovers a strange and interesting exotic plant, who is later discovered to talk and demand to be fedwith human flesh & blood. With a score in the style of rock and roll, doo-wop and Motown, fame and fortune come to Seymour and the plants appetite grows as the cast rapidly diminishes in this charmingly dark and cheeky musical.

Metamorphosis: 31st March- 4th April, Chapter Arts

Gregor spends every waking hour working to put food on the table but one morning he wakes up transformed into a gigantic insect. His cherished sister and caring mother do the best they can to tend for Gregor but their love is challenged, creating a physical and mental distance. In the meantime, GregorÔÇÖs father fulfils his duties while his son strives to find a role. This stage adaptation of a classic novella explores the turmoil of a neglected individual as he struggles to adapt to an impossible disability.

So if any (or all) of these take your fancy, please come along!
