Golf make the cut in derby win

USW: 0
Cardiff:  6

The first team travelled to the Vale Golf Club on Wednesday to play the newly formed University of South Wales, Pontypridd & Cardiff first team.

The Cardiff golf teams have played their home matches at the Vale for the last few seasons so the course was very familiar, and the benign conditions allowed the players to take full advantage against a team Cardiff were expected to beat.

After a good showing last week, Cardiff made just one change with Owen Davies replacing the unavailable Pablo Ouro.  Davies fully justified his selection with a commanding 4 & 2 victory.

The two winners from the first game, Matt Price and Jack Mann, were playing again today and they both carried on their winning run with 3 & 1 and 5 & 4 victories respectively. With little wind, the course was fairly defenceless against Mann, playing off scratch, who continued his fine form this season.

Lewys Charles and Alex Winn both secured victories early on in the round, with Winn completing a 6 & 5 rout to win on the 13th hole and remain unbeaten this season. Charles, who was so close to victory in the game against Swansea, also produced a convincing win, this time 4 & 2.

Cara Gainer completed the whitewash in only her second game for the team with some solid play as she swept aside her opponent by a margin of 3 & 2. After the narrow loss to Swansea, it was a relief for everyone to get the first points on the board.

The 6 ÔÇô 0 victory was fully deserved thanks to some fantastic golf and was desperately needed after the first week loss with the team eyeing promotion. The first team are at home next week against University of South Wales, Newport, as they look to continue their solid start to the season.
