LadiesÔÇÖ 1st XI football cruise to victory over 2nd XI

Cardiff 1sts: 7
Cardiff 2nds: 0

Cardiff University Ladies 1st XI secured their first win of the season last Wednesday after defeating Cardiff University Ladies 2nds by seven goals to nil. Friendships were put to one side between the two sides for 90 minutes as both teams battled for the win. Both teams hope to secure a respectable finish in the BUCS Western Conference 2B this season and this game was the perfect start to kick-start both campaigns respectively.

Hattie Gillet opened the scoring as she skipped past the defender and blasted the ball into the back of the net.  An impressive start from the 1st XI saw the ball remain firmly in the opposition half, with the side enjoying long periods of possession.

Jess Ham and Victoria Francis both put in strong displays out on the wings. The 1sts utilized this strength by playing with width, which soon gifted Abi Smyth her first goal of the season as she tapped the ball into the net after a superb cross from Francis. The first half saw the 1st team go ahead by five goals to nil as Smyth scored another, with captain Ellie Davies bagging a brace.

As the second half began, Cardiff 2nds piled on the pressure, playing with a high line in an attempt to catch players offside. There were long periods of possession for both teams as 2nds captain Hazel Preston remained vocal at the back. Ten minutes into the second half another goal came for the 1sts, which was skillfully put away by Gillet. Davies then completed her hat trick and the scoring after squeezing the ball in from a tight angle from close range.

A strong performance for the LadiesÔÇÖ 1sts will undoubtedly provide the side with a much-needed confidence boost after a heavy defeat against Gloucestershire 2nds two weeks ago. The 1sts will look to continue their impressive form in front of goal in their next fixture on November 13th at home to UWE.

It was a strong performance by the 1sts. It has given them a lot more confidence as they tucked away a number of goals and showed how much of a tight passing team they are. Hopefully, they can build on this as they face UWE on the 13th of November.
