Medics romp to football victory

University 3rd XI ……………….. 1

Medics 1st XI ……………………… 5

On a cloudy day at Llanrumney Playing Fields, Cardiff Medics 1st XI came out on top against Cardiff University 3rd XI.

The important fixture would see the winner of the tie remain in the BUCS Western Conference 3B division, while the defeated side would drop down to Western Conference 4B.

Both teams made a decent start to the match, but it was the Medics who took the lead after 15 minutes, following a corner to the near post, which was volleyed into the bottom corner.

The Medics began to dominate the match and they soon widened their advantage to two goals with an outstanding left-footed effort from the striker, turning the centre-back and firing a bullet of a shot from 25 yards out into the top corner.

They soon made it three, with confusion over a possible foul on a University player causing a defensive mix-up from which the Medics once again profited.

By this time, the University players, understandably frustrated, were starting to put in some strong challenges, but the referee took a lenient approach.

With the half-time break approaching, the Medics had asserted a comfortable three-goal lead. Early in the second half, matters got even worse for the University as the Medics extended their lead even further and looked set to run riot.

The 3rd XI, however, responded well and, for the first time, striker Seb Finkle was able to get in behind the MedicsÔÇÖ defence and slotted home from a tight angle to give the 3rd XI hope of a comeback.

However, a few minutes later, the Medics were reduced to 10 men when Connor Fielder was given a straight red card for misconduct towards the referee.

With a three-goal advantage and an extra player on the field, the Medics started to keep the ball excellently and scored another superb goal from 25 yards as the game drew to a conclusion. This made the final score an emphatic 5-1 to the Medics.

The result means that, after a difficult season in Western 3B this year, Cardiff University 3rd XI will drop down to play in the Western 4B league next year, with Cardiff Medics taking their place in the division above.
