Sleeping burglar arrested on the job

A man has been prosecuted for attempted burglary after he was caught sleeping in a car he had broken into. Alexander Sinclair, a 30-year-old man from Bristol, had broken into a house on Rhymney Street, taken keys and stayed in the car overnight. Whilst the police were being alerted to what had happened, Sinclair was fast asleep, and it apparently took a while to wake him. In spite of him being in the driverÔÇÖs seat when he was found, he told the police that his intention was only to stay dry and rest when it began to rain.

Byron Broadstock, who was defending Sinclair at Cardiff Crown Court, suggested that the defendantÔÇÖs tiredness resulted from his consumption of alcohol mixed with his anti-depression medication. The Court heard that this had happened to Sinclair on a previous and similar occasion.┬á Judge Eleri Rees gave Alexander Sinclair a six-month suspended sentence, and recommended that he should take part in an alcohol treatment programme. She added that breaking into someoneÔÇÖs home has ÔÇ£a profound psychological effect on the victimÔÇØ.

Burglary statistics in Cathays are at their highest since September 2011. Cathays has the highest overall crime rate in the area and although it is a strong student base, Cardiff police recommend that students in the area take extra care to lock doors, and look after valuable property.
