Ultimate frisbee ready for Varsity encounter

The weekend of March 29th-30th saw 52 Ultimate frisbee clubs from across the country descend upon Cardiff for the first mixed tournament of the year, Mixed Tour 1.  There was a very strong turnout from Cardiff University Ultimate Frisbee Club, with two teams entered.

CardiffÔÇÖs first team was composed of experienced current players and alumni, including former ladiesÔÇÖ captain Katie Jackson and current GB player Sam Bowen.┬á Six hard-fought games over the course of the weekend, including three wins, meant that the team finished three places above their original seeding.┬á They are now ranked 27th in the UK.

MenÔÇÖs captain Kei Matsumoto described the weekend as ÔÇ£a fantastic opportunity to expose University players to high-level non-university Ultimate frisbeeÔÇØ.

With the club using the tournament as an opportunity to develop upcoming players who had previously never played at club level, their second team was made up of new, young players led by club captain Bon Leung.

The second team were by far the youngest team competing in the tournament and faced a tough task against some of the best and most experienced players in the country.  They eventually managed to finish two places above their seeded position.

The clubÔÇÖs focus now switches to WednesdayÔÇÖs Varsity match against fierce rivals Swansea ÔÇô a fixture that has grown more competitive with every meeting between the two sides.┬á Cardiff will be looking to build upon their impressive showing when the teams last met at Open Outdoor Regionals, which left Cardiff convincing 8-3 victors.

As Swansea have failed to qualify for this monthÔÇÖs Division One Nationals, this will be the last opportunity for many players to experience the rivalry.┬á For the less experienced players, Varsity represents the perfect opportunity for the players to develop their game ahead of the Nationals, which Cardiff will head into with high expectations.
