University seconds come out on top in womenÔÇÖs hockey play-off

University 2nd XI .... 2

Medics 1st XI …ÔǪÔǪ…………ÔǪ… 0

On a crisp and clear Wednesday afternoon, Talybont saw the much-anticipated clash between Cardiff University ladiesÔÇÖ 2nd XI and Cardiff University Medics ladiesÔÇÖ 1st XI, which resulted in a comfortable two-goal winning margin for the University side.

The match was to determine who would be ranked higher in next seasonÔÇÖs BUCS divisions. With a big crowd drawn from both clubs, the match started intensely, with both teams eager and enthusiastic to play their game.

The University team pressed well, but the MedicsÔÇÖ defence held off any attack with some excellent stick tackles from Jenny Stuart-Smith.

The game was proving very even with near misses at both ends.

However, just before the half-time whistle and after multiple ventures into the ÔÇÿDÔÇÖ, the ball was driven in on the right and swept in at the far post by Mollie Williams.

It appeared that the University coaches Will Teagle and Alex Spencer had given some stern words at the break and Uni came out pressing higher than they had before.

Medics rebuffed many attacks and held some excellent possession, with Pippa Barnes driving down the left on many occasions and looking dangerous.

Nevertheless, with some counter-attacking play and benefitting from a quick ball in from Rosie Harper, there was some messy hockey around the penalty spot, resulting in the goalkeeper being caught on the left and a goal going in on the right from Sioned Davies.  This put the University side 2-0 in the lead, with 15 minutes remaining in the match.

The Medics saw a lot of possession in this final stage of the game and the crowd was very excited at their every break. However, no more goals were to come as the full-time blew.

It was a very competitive and even game. The result will see the University ladiesÔÇÖ 2nd XI remain above the Medics in the team seedings for next season.
