Ones to watch

On DAY 1: the vibrant Broadway Dance Society offers classes in Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Street, Highland and Irish dancing at levels ranging ÔÇÿfrom the complete beginner to the super-advancedÔÇÖ.

Our Pole Dancing Society – a young society based around a skill that is a competitive sport as well as an impressive, edgy dance style.

The Film Society, for all film aficionados, also comprises DiffFilm, their very own production branch.

On DAY 2: For those of a musical turn, there is a host of opportunities: Brass Band, Windband, Music Soc, LiveMusic Soc, Jazz Soc, Operatic Soc and GRIMSoc if you like goth, rock, industrial or metal.

Also watch out for the Bell Ringing Society, a welcoming group of learners and seasoned ringers who partake in the skill of change-ringing church bells; The CU Purcell Singers (TCUPS), ÔÇÿa non-auditioning choir who sing everything from Tallis to Billy JoelÔÇÖ, and the female choir Blank Verse.

DAY 1: Mental Wealth Society, a ÔÇÿvoluntary welfare organisation run by students for studentsÔÇÖ designed to complement the Student Support Centre by offering personal welfare information and peer support in a welcoming environment.

The Christian Union and our Catholic Society (based at the Anglican and Catholic Chaplaincies at 61 and 62 Park Place) are running a plethora of events during Freshers’ Week and throughout the year. See also the Krishna Consciousness Society and Ahlul Bayt Society.

DAY 2: Erasmus Society, the Students with Disabilities Association, the Welsh Students Association and a variety of religious, cultural and International societies.

DAY 1: The Fruit and Veg Co-op is ÔÇÿa student-led service society which offers convenient weekly access to economically priced fruit, vegetables, salad and stir fry ingredientsÔÇÖ in the Union.

The Cooking Society is there to help you ÔÇÿlearn basic cooking skills and recipes which are easy, quick and cheapÔÇÖ.

The Duke of Edinburgh Society offers students the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award scheme.

Keep a look out for the many course-based societies too.

DAY 2: Students with Disabilities for mutual support, education, discussion and improvement of the Union for differently-abled students.

Young ÔÇÖuns

DAY 1: The Capoiera Society ÔÇô ÔÇÿa Brazilian art form combining elements of martial art, dance, acrobatics and music which evolved from the struggle of African slaves against their oppressors.’ It benefits fitness, flexibility and rhythm as well as giving an opportunity to learn to play some unusual musical instruments and to speak a bit of Portuguese.ÔÇÖ Entering their second year, this lively young society would love to tell you more at their stall.

DAY 2: The Airsoft Society organises games of this combat simulation sport, like paintballing but using plastic ÔÇÿBBsÔÇÖ, and is looking for those with a taste for this fun tactical sport to join them.

Old classics

On DAY 1: Look out for the Cardiff University Debating Society (CUDS), the ideal CV and confidence-booster for all from complete beginners to confident speakers at all competition levels.

On DAY 2: Check out Act OneÔÇÖs stall: our long-established, ambitious and eclectic drama society is for all budding thespians, with ample opportunities also available behind the scenes.
