Their status as one of the UK’s top live acts cemented, and with cult heroes Brand New in tow, Biffy Clyro brought their festival experience to Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena.
Brand New, playing a mix of songs from fan favourite albums Deja Entendu┬áand The Devil and God…┬ápower through a 45 minute set barely saying a word except to thank Biffy Clyro for taking them on tour. The set is brooding and fierce, and at times felt less like a supporting act and at times, more of a headline band.
On the back of their second Reading and Leeds headline appearance, Biffy Clyro have brought the same impressive stage production as seen at R&L over the summer. Performing songs from the whole of their 14 year back catalogue, with deep cuts from their debut album and breakout album Puzzle┬áproving popular with many in the crowd. The show is more of a showcase of the band as a whole than of any particular member, or of any particular phase in their career. Fan favourites like Many of Horror and Mountains stand out in the 27 song set, which included an almost complete play through of their latest release, Ellipsis. Songs from their new album, whilst well received, lacked the same kind of emotive response that older songs had from the packed out arena – with none commanding the same levels of energy from the crowd. Despite the number of new songs on the set list, with it being the Ellipsis tour and all, the show was energetic and crowd pleasing. Especially refreshing in its longevity, with many arena bands opting to play considerably shorter sets. Everything about the experience, from the handpicked special guests, to the full festival set-up, and the deep cuts, show a band in their prime.
