Showcase Creativity was alive and buzzing at Cardiff University’s Film Production Society’s event. A night that gave a platform for emerging filmmakers to shine. The event itself felt like a celebration of everything that keeps Cardiff’s creative scene ticking: collaboration, curiosity, and a little chaos. Hosted by the sharply dressed announcer, Conor Holland, whose quick wit kept the audience laughing between films. The evening even included a raffle, with all donations going to MediCinema. It was a perfect touch that reminded everyone how creativity and community go hand in hand.
The Evening Standouts!
Lost Tapes of Hazy Memories – Dir. Samay Dixit
One standout for me was Lost Tapes of Hazy Memories; the first animated film ever screened at the festival. Presented as a series of looping videos, it carried a haunting intimacy, layering nostalgia and unease through its textures and rhythm. I’ve always had a soft spot for homebrewed animation, and this one hit that sweet spot perfectly. In an interview with director Samay, I asked whether that surreal shot was inspired by Junji Ito’s infamous “vortex face.” He smiled and fondly agreed.

The Gaffer – Dir. Samay Dixit
Throughout the night, it seems as though the Director Samay Dixit was on somewhat of a role. His debut of the night was done so with the hilarious; The Gaffer. A brilliant slapstick piece about a narcissistic, chaotic football coach who was played by Samay himself. It was a short piece, but it kept you enticed throughout. With mockumentary style interviews with the football team and The Gaffer himself, and funny handheld shots of the chaos, it was hard to look away.

Other highlights included Late Night with the Storyteller, a meta take on online behaviour and the digital personas we invent. See You Next Year, a look at a friend group that can’t seem to shake each other off (their drama ages like expensive wine, or maybe more like cheese). The Adventures of Eskel McLaughlin, about a detective’s noble quest to recover a stolen umbrella. As well as Audition, where we follow a traumatised man slowly losing grip under pressure.
It was a pleasure to be there and looking forward to another year of wonderful creation!
