Review: Ted

REVIEW

Director: Seth MacFarlane

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane

Rating: 3/5

John [Mark Wahlberg] was one of those lucky kids whose childhood wish came true. He wanted his teddy to come to life and become his BFF. Behold the animation of Ted! Like many films and joy-killers in the past, this romantic comedy from Family Guy director Seth MacFarlane (who also provides the voice of Ted) teaches people to be careful what they wish for. What seemed as a fluffy bundle of fun as a kid begins to put a strain on JohnÔÇÖs relationship with his long-term girlfriend Lori [Mila Kunis] decades later. Friendship and love are weighed up in JohnÔÇÖs head and heart as he tries to decide which of his nearest companions to stop seeing.

TedÔÇÖs lewd, antisocial frat-boy behaviour causes a handful of cheap laughs that fade in their funniness once the film ends. ┬áPoop jokes, swearing and drug-induced stupidity are in abundance, inviting the audience to join in with the bearÔÇÖs misbehaviour and his casual view on the real world. ┬áWithout these moments, all that remains is a generic rom-com storyline of troubled love and a spot of jealousy. Luckily, there are enough satirical jabs at society to blur this fact, allowing viewers to float among the easy humour until Ted ends. It’s furry, funny and farcical for a one-off watch, but not worth buying on DVD.
