Review: SBTRKT-Wonder Where We Land

SBTRKT album cover

A thoroughly impressive release.

SBTRKT, the self-taught masked producer, returns with his second album, Wonder Where We Land. This release sees a move away from the cheerful dubstep-meets-garage of the first album, and towards a much edgier and almost otherworldly sound. One feature that has been kept, however, is the regular collaboration, including bringing back Sampha, and Jessie Ware from the first album. The former features on no less than four songs on the record. The partnership between SBTRKT and Sampha does not disappoint, with the title track and Temporary View to proving exactly that.

New additions include such big names as A$AP Ferg and Ezra Koenig, alongside the fresh face of Raury. The 18 year old steals the show, with the flawless flow of a veteran, coupled with the energy and desire to prove himself. This track is exceptional. Another relative newcomer to really take centre stage on the album is Denai Moore, on The Light, a truly sensational track. This fresh blood, however, does not in any way sideline SBTRKT. One only has to listen to Look Away to be shown that he is very much still in the driving seat here.

SBTRKT goes a little deeper, a little darker on his second release, but this does nothing to remove any of the sheer talent we saw in his debut full length. He has also proven exactly how good his eye for potential collaborators is, bringing in some of the biggest up and coming stars, and pitting them against artists at the top of their game. A thoroughly impressive release.
