Described by some as the grey area between folk and dub-step (or folk-step if you will), An Awesome Wave is a remarkably well produced debut album, regardless of genre classification.┬á Yes, they have a, at best, fairly pretentious name and yes, there are three interlude tracks on this album; but look past these things and you will find some finely crafted pop songs, that together make one cohesive album. Aside from their unusual name, it has been their lyrics which have earned the band attention and praise; often writing about conventional songs topics (romance) in more unconventional ways (holding your loved one down with breezeblocks).┬á These lyrics are, however, delivered by a voice which is pure marmite; Joe NewmanÔÇÖs nasally tones has proved to be quite divisive among listeners.┬á While I actually really enjoy it, I find deciphering the lyrics an almost impossible challenge at times due to the heavy slurring in some songs, notably Fitzpleasure; thankfully, the thoughtful instrumentation and slick production goes some way to compensate for this. An enjoyable debut this certainly is, but I whether I will return to this album with the same enthusiasm that I have for it now at the end of the year or not is uncertain.
