What is ‘JAMNESTY’?

Becca Stamatis┬átells Quench Culture about the who’s, what’s,┬áwhere’s, when’s and why’s about Amnesty International’s┬áhosting of ‘Jamnesty’,┬áin aid of ‘My Body My Rights campaign’.

Jamnesty is Amnesty InternationalÔÇÖs annual jam night, raising money and making noise about the worldÔÇÖs leading human rights organisation. Cardiff UniversityÔÇÖs Amnesty International Society is hosting their Jamnesty event at 10 Feet Tall on Thursday 10th March, at 7pm until late. So take a night off from your uni work, celebrate human rights and raise money for a great cause. Gracing the stage will be acoustic/hip-hop band ‘Thomasina’ and the Undercover Mermaids, beatboxer Beatbox Hann, soulful guitarist Dippy, Cardiff’s┬áAcapella Societies very own ‘Vox’ and indie/pop four-piece Safari Gold. With this wealth of diverse music talent and tickets costing just ┬ú3.50 for students (with cheap drinks)┬áit is surely not one to be missed!

This year Amnesty has focused on the My Body My Rights campaign, defending our sexual and reproductive rights. The freedom to make decisions about our own health, body, sexual life and identity is a fundamental human right. Nevertheless women are denied access to safe abortion services, in El Salvador and often in places closer to home such as Ireland. Women are denied the right to choose their sexual partner, in the Maghreb and denied information and contraception, in Nepal and Burkina Faso. Amnesty is campaigning for the decriminalization of abortion, the freedom from sexuality/gender based discriminatory laws and sexual violence (e.g. rape and female genital mutilation) and the access to safe sexual/reproductive health services and education.

As well as fundraising via Jamnesty, their annual comedy night (The Secret PolicemanÔÇÖs Ball) and bake sales are also increase the profile of this campaign! ┬áTo further raise awareness on the issues, they are holding a public demonstration outside the StudentsÔÇÖ Union on Friday 4th March, between 11am and 2pm. Visit them to find out more about the campaign, sign their petitions and whist there, pick up a free condom!

For only ┬ú3.50, it’s surely worth it, right?
