A/W Beauty Trends

A look at the key beauty trends for Autumn/Winter – think berry shades, punk and flawless skin!

The catwalks showcased a variety of fresh beauty looks for autumn/winter which inspired, but as always there were some key trends that shone through. For A/W make-up artists took spring’s trends and adapted them for the winter season, replacing matte lips with berry shades along with a new focus on ladylike make-up. ┬áHere is Quench Fashion’s pick of the key trends that you can attempt at home to instantly update your look!

Hair

Alexander Wang

The Autumn/Winter 2013 catwalks have given us plenty to follow and admire this year, including hairstyles. The continuation of many popular styles was seen, including ombre hair- or ÔÇÿdip dyeÔÇÖ but also some new comers, such as the ÔÇÿwet lookÔÇÖ. But here is my pick of three of the most popular and easy styles to try out.

The ÔÇÿwet lookÔÇÖ can be used to create a smooth ponytail as seen at Gucci or a tussled bun as styled at the Dior shows; which is great for if you havenÔÇÖt had the chance to dry your hair but are late for a lecture! The likes of Victoria Beckham, Chlo├® and Alexander Wang have all included pony tails- it can be slick and polished or low and laid back. This versatile look can be easily imitated by anyone, whatever cut or length your hair is. The ombre look is also still around- Vera Wang uses a subtle but high starting blonde, yet any colour and height works, as long as it doesnÔÇÖt look like you have just forgotten to do your roots! Alexander Wang combined all three of these styles to create a sophisticated and fashionable look. So take your pick of any of these styles to instantly give your hair an update, whether itÔÇÖs for a day at lectures or a night out!

Lips and Eyes

nina-ricci_GAIf there was one song to sum up Autumn/Winter 2013 it would definitely be David BowieÔÇÖs Rebel, Rebel. Androgynous punk is key this season and in true anarchist style, distressed colours, worn off lipsticks and smudged eyeliners are full in force.┬áKeep your skin simple, yet glossy. Back away from the blusher and let your lips and lids do the talking.

For the brave hearts amongst us, try a deep purple shade (MACÔÇÖs aptly titled ┬áÔÇ£RebelÔÇØ ┬ú15) pressed onto the centre of your lips and dab the colour outwards, ensuring an effortlessly ÔÇÿjust-been-kissedÔÇÖ, worn in lip. Those who wish to pay homage to VersaceÔÇÖs more glamorous hybrid of ÔÇÿVunkÔÇÖ, slick a clear gloss over the top of your purple lip and keep your eyes simple.

For the notorious smudged eye with an AW13 twist, take inspiration from Missoni and Rodarte and pay close attention to not only the lid, but also the lower lash line. Kohl eyeliner is key to any smudged eye look and as precision is definitely not required, the look is so versatile and easy to create.

Using a chunky, black kohl pencil (like MaybellineÔÇÖs Master Smoky ┬ú3.99), draw a thick line across the upper and lower lash line. Take your ring finger, as it provides the least amount┬áof pressure, and smudge the kohl outwards.

For both key looks, just add lashings of mascara, grab your leather jacket and stomp out of the door. You little Rebel, you.

Skincare

The dewy-skinned complexion has dominated catwalk beauty for a long time but this Autumn/Winter, there has been an undeniable shift towards groomed, velvety smooth skin. This embracing of matte satin skin was apparent at Victoria Beckham, Balmain, Chloe and Stella McCartney. And now you can get the look too with QuenchÔÇÖs top tips.

Victoria Beckham AW13Velvet skin needs to look almost translucent without a flaw or pore in sight; just a dreamy, mattified base. A good canvas is key- use a gentle exfoliator to scrub away dead skin cells and ensure a super silky base.

Now, hydrate! Oil-free moisturisers are ideal for dismissing a dewy touch and lending moisture without the shine.

Once moisturiser has been applied, use a primer to eradicate oil, soften flaws and fill in fine lines instantly. Primers are also great for keeping your make-up in place; one layer makes skin feel peachy soft so foundation just glides on and stays put.

Next, pat on a CC cream- this wonder product evens out skin tones, creates an all-over radiance and did we mention it also has amazing skincare benefits? Well, we did now!

This trend is all about great skin which doesnÔÇÖt rely solely on make-up so get perfecting your skincare routine, ladies!
