Capsule Wardrobe: Uni Edition

Capsule wardrobes have risen in popularity due to the growth of sustainable fashion and the cost-of-living crisis. However, this trend dates back to the 1970s and was originated by Susie Faux, the owner a boutique in London. Faux devised the term ‘capsule wardrobe’ to encourage people that less is more. This promoted purchasing higher quality pieces that wouldn’t date, so could be worn over and over again.

Capsule wardrobes are ideal for university students. From the struggle of having limited space in accommodation to being on a tight budget, they are a uni student’s best friend for resolving their problems whilst looking stylish all year round. But where do you begin? Here’s the ultimate guide for comfort, style and ease.

Basics, Basics, Basics

Basics are a girl’s best friend, especially at uni. 2-3 of each basic is a good place to start and you can build your collection overtime. T-shirts, tank tops, turtlenecks and jumpers are perfect for layering in the colder months. But what colours? Neutral colours such as white, cream, black, grey and brown can be mixed and matched super easily – this is key when creating a capsule wardrobe. With bottoms, a good few pairs of jeans in different shades is the way to go. They are effortlessly perfect for transitional day-to-night outfits. Also, a couple of pairs of leggings and joggers are useful for a relaxed lecture outfit on the days when you want to feel extra comfy.

More On Layers

Walking to and from lectures in the autumn/winter months calls for layers. Investing in statement pieces is ideal. A trending statement piece is the classic trench coat. Adding the trench to any outfit creates a polished look and keeps you toasty at the same time. Another piece that is worth investing in is a blazer, giving you a professional and well put-together look. Scarves, hats and gloves are other essentials to elevate a look and are effective during the colder months.

Footwear Staples

Keep it simple with shoes. A pair of trainers is perfect for your everyday look and can be styled with almost every outfit, which is exactly what you’re looking for when creating your very own capsule wardrobe. Adidas is a great brand choice as they are comfortable, durable and stylish. However, any brand and style of trainer will do. If you want to elevate your day-to-day look, a pair of black or brown boots could be a shout to feel well put together and they will keep you dry in rainy weather.

Party Life (On A Budget)

University students are known for their love of drinking and party culture, so curating a wardrobe with staple “going out” pieces is a must. As mentioned, jeans are ideal in a capsule wardrobe. Pair with cute strappy tops or a bodysuit and a pair of black kitten heels. Let’s talk jackets. All you need is one jacket to see you through nights out in the colder seasons. A black leather jacket is always a good option to look dressy and it will go with pretty much anything.
