Student-Friendly Beauty – Mascara

Beauty writer Kirsty Fardell gives us the lowdown on the best student-budget friendly mascaras.

All Time Favourite:

L’Oreal Paris False Lash Flutter Mascara in Midnight Extra Black – £10.99 from Boots OR £7.99 delivered from

mascara 2

I stumbled across this mascara only because it was on offer during the summer, but now I can’t imagine using an alternative. It has L’Oreal’s usual favourite comb style brush, but one side bristles curving outwards – this works perfectly with the curvature of your lashes. It’s great for building up a more dramatic night look or creating a more subtle day time look, with the clever brush design fanning out lashes to add plenty of volume and length. I constantly have to prove I’m not wearing falsies as a result of this mascara, and my strong Essex accent doesn’t help in convincing…

Trusty Maybelline:

Maybelline The Volum’ Express Colossal Smokey Mascara – £7.99 from Boots

mascara 1

Maybelline is my usual go-to for mascaras, and they don’t disappoint. Their Volum’ Express range all do the job and are affordable, but I prefer the thicker heavily bristled brush on this one. It allows more mascara to be applied so you can effortlessly build volume. It’s quick to apply, easy to take off and can create thicker and fuller looking lashes without too much effort. Not sure why they’ve named it Smokey as not too much different from the other Colossal mascaras, but the whole range is decent with a fair few different style brush choices to suit everyone.

Max Versatile

Max Factor False Lash Effect Fusion Mascara – currently £11.99 in Boots

mascara 3

The fine comb on this brush gives the look of long, thin and perfectly fanned lashes with ease. Suitable for day or night, it’s the length you’ll get most notice for. The fine comb means you can carefully pick out every lash without poking yourself in the face and ruining the rest of your make up! From corner to corner you’ll gain length and definition, and with a bit more time and effort you can build up volume for a more dramatic look. Although north of a tenner, it does last ages, as it is 13ml whereas most mascaras are between 7-10ml.
