Don Cheadle to Suit Up in Avengers 2

Iron Patriot bulks up the Avengers ranks in the upcoming sequel. Charlie Andrews explores the announcement

Iron-Patriot Don Cheadle as Iron Patriot in Iron Man 3

Earlier this week Don Cheadle was nominated for a Golden Globe for his Showtime series House of Lies. And during the flurry of awards coverage that followed, a report emerged indicating that the actor will be appearing as his┬áIron Man character Col. James ÔÇ£RhodeyÔÇØ Rhodes/ War Machine/ Iron Patriot in The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

It has since been confirmed by HitFix that Rhodes “has a key role in the conflict with Ultron”. The site also adds that “one thing you can count on is that at the end of Avengers: Age Of Ultron, the group that calls themselves The Avengers isn’t going to be the same group we saw eating shwarma together at the end of the first film”.

Iron Patriot is the latest character to join the roster in the highly anticipated The Avengers: Age of Ultron. It has already been confirmed that Elizabeth Olsen (Kill Your Darlings) will play Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, whilst Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass) will play her twin brother Pietro Maximoff, aka Quicksilver. The Avengers: Age of Ultron is slated for a 2015 release.

Wanda and Pietro Maximoff are the twin children of renowned mutant Magneto. Once Pietro and Wanda reach adolescence, they discover that they are in fact mutants. Pietro possesses superhuman speed, while Wanda learns that she can control probability. When the pair display their powers in public, and are attacked by a superstitious crowd, their father saves them although neither Magneto nor his children are aware of their connection. Magneto then recruits the pair for the first incarnation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

The Brotherhood battles the X-Men on several occasions and the twins become reluctant members of the Brotherhood and only remain because of their obligation to Magneto. When Magneto is abducted the Brotherhood dissolves and the twins declare that their debt to Magneto has been paid. Soon after Magneto’s abduction, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are recruited by Iron Man to join the Avengers.

  1. Yes, they will not be referred to as “mutants” nor will Magneto be mentioned due to Fox owning the X-Men rights. Evan Peters will be playing Pietro Maximoff in X-Men: Days of Future Past and that version of the character will be able to draw on the complete heritage.

Don Cheadle will be appearing in Avengers 2 and as Lewis points out above he will be suiting up. Tony Stark has changed since Iron Man 3 but as the film concludes he states that you can take away all his fancy things but there is one thing you can’t take away “I am Iron Man”. Even though the rector in his chest was removed he is still able to use the Iron Man armour, take War Machine/ Iron Patriot as your example. He no longer has the chest piece but he is STILL Iron Man

  2. If you read the announcement above it says Rhodey “has a key role in the conflict with Ultron”. I can’t imagine Rhodey being involved in the “conflict” out of the suit. We already have Black Widow and Hawkeye for hand to hand combat. Rhodey will be in the armour and for continuity I expect it to be in the Iron Patriot branding

  3. It’s worth noting that neither Wanda nor Pietro will be referred to as “mutants” in Age of Ultron. All film rights to the X-Men and related Marvel Comics properties are owned by Fox, so even though it’s a Marvel film, they can’t use the word “mutant”.

Also, has it been confirmed that Rhodey will be Iron Patriot again, or could he make a return to the War Machine branding? Will he even suit up at all? I think all we know at the moment is that Don Cheadle will be in the film as Col. James Rhodes (though it’s safe to assume he’ll suit up, since Tony Stark *SPOILERS* is no longer Iron Man).
