HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS
Release date: January 2013
Riding on the success of Snow White and The Huntsman and Little Red Riding Hood, Tommy Wirkola directs this dark take on the Brothers GrimmÔÇÖs well-known fairytale, starring Jeremy Renner (The Avengers), Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans), and Famke Janssen (Taken).
Despite the seemingly juvenile title, this is not a childrenÔÇÖs movie. The trailer promises a ÔÇ£Classic TaleÔÇØ with a ÔÇ£new twistÔÇØ, and plenty of action, gore, and explosions. This ÔÇ£new takeÔÇØ sees Hansel and Gretel as vengeful witch hunters, 15 years after their original encounter with a witch in the fateful gingerbread house. As well as ageing the protagonists, Wirokla puts a new twist on the Grimm portrayal of the witches, and rather than being green-faced villains that we are used to seeing in fairytale books, these are ferocious, blood-hungry and menacing.
The film looks to be entertaining and not concerned with taking itself too seriously. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters will be hitting cinemas in 3D, this January. And if the film is successful, expect plenty of sequels in the coming years.
