Review: Zi’s Cafe, authentic Chinese in Cardiff – Tan Wen Min

Tan Wen Min┬átells us┬áabout one of her favourite Chinese restaurants in Cardiff, Zi’s Cafe.

If thereÔÇÖs one thing you can learn┬áfrom eating Chinese food, itÔÇÖs that you’ll never get tired of it! Zi’s Cafe is a family-run restaurant has been in Cardiff since 2009; its extensive menu covers everything from a multitude of meat and seafood dishes, to even Chinese desserts.

An undisputed favourite amongst the substantial Malaysian student community in Cardiff is the Chicken with Spring Onion & Dried Chilli dish (pictured below), popular for its combination of spicy and sweet flavours. However, the menu does offer the usual suspects such as Sweet and Sour Chicken, Beef Flank with Dry Chilli & Sze Chuan Pepper and so on if you want to stick to what you know.

YouÔÇÖd also find a plate of Deep Fried Aubergine with Chilli and Garlic on most tables. The savoury flavours┬áand crunch┬áof the deep fried aubergine will make you forget that youÔÇÖre actually eating a plate of vegetables! Nonetheless, the restaurant does have the typical Chinese vegetable dishes such as the Chinese Leaf served with┬áeither garlic, oyster sauce or ginger, or the Broccoli with Chinese Mushrooms.

If youÔÇÖre a fan of fish, have it ‘ZiÔÇÖs Cafe style’ – the fish slices are pan fried with eggs, and mixed with vinegar and garlic. The fishÔÇÖs clean-tasting flesh will perfectly complement the many different flavours you will encounter in this restaurant.

Service here is quick, prices are reasonable, and they offer a 10% student discount if you show your student ID. If youÔÇÖre in a hurry, their selection of fried rice dishes ranging from King Prawn Fried Rice to the classic Chicken Fried Rice are particularly comforting options. As a bonus, Zi’s Cafe┬áalso provides a delivery service for orders over ┬ú10! Rain or shine, you will still be able to get your Chinese food.
