Happy New Year

Hello everyone! We hope you’ve had a lovely Christmas and a lovely 2013!

2013 was certainly lovely for us at Xpress. We got to go to London in November an dress up all nice and that. When we were there, as well as free wine and liquorice (yeah mate, liquorice), we were lucky enough to receive a Silver award for our Varsity 2013 coverage in the Best Live Event or Outside Broadcast category, and an amazing Bronze in the Best Station category, making Xpress the 3rd best student radio station in the country. This is a massive achievement for the station, Cardiff Student Media and our University, to be recognised on a national level is amazing. I’d just like to quickly and cheesily thank the brilliant Xpress team that won us the accolade, led by Hannah Cook (Station Manager) and Ed Lecorgne (Deputy Station Manager). The two of them in particular poured their hearts into what they did for the station, and we’re all incredibly grateful, and honoured to have such big shoes to fill.

It’s only bloomin’ Matt Jones!

Following in their footsteps are Matt Jones, who succeeded Hannah as Manager of the station, and me. We were chuffed to be named to lead the station for the next academic year, and it’s been an absolute blast so far.

“So, Sam. What the bloomin’ ‘ell have you been doing since September? Studying?”

NO.
The term started with Freshers’ Week, and meeting a load of lovely new faces in the Great Hall at the Societies’ Fayres, as well as broadcasting some shows from the Taf.
Some of those lovely people we met decided they wanted to join our station, and as a result we have what is probably the biggest and most diverse timetable we’ve had at Xpress. Such a wealth of talent joined Xpress, and since October have been broadcasting house music, classical music, LGBT+, Agony Aunt, rock music, entertainment, politics, and female-power shows, and personally I’ve been loving them.
We’ll be posting a podcast on here very soon demonstrating what we’ve been offering over the last few months, make sure to keep your eyes and ears peeled for it!

In addition to our regular schedule, we’ve tried our hands at some outside-broadcasts and live shows, which have not only been really fun to do but have helped us connect to Cardiff’s students, provide them with something they’ll enjoy, and get our name out there to the people! POWER TO THE PEOPLE.
…where was I?

So YEAH, firstly, we put our political thinking caps on for our coverage of the ANNUAL MEMBERS’ MEETING. Held in the Students’ Union, it was an opportunity for students to express their opinions and views, and vote for change. It was so cool to see the student populous debate and discuss issues, and improve the union. POWER TO THE PEOP…sorry…

Team Xpress at Drink The Bar Dry 2013

Every year, just before Christmas, DRINK THE BAR DRY is a massive event that gets everyone excited, and 2013 was no exception. It was another lively occasion, and Xpress got involved in the whole thing…as did Santa apparently. Games were played, carols were sung, and even presents were given out! Including those weird alien egg things we had as kids that make me feel a bit sick…Merry Christmas…

FINALLY, there was something completely new for Xpress that I was really excited to try out…our very first recordings of GETTING INTO CARDIFF, a comedy panel show that we wrote, produced, and presented. The teams were consisted of the captains Jess Rodgerson and Rob England, and┬áwe had guests ranging from semi-professional stand-ups, to Xpress alumni, to Dom from Folk Roots. I loved presenting it, and it’ll be ready form broadcast soon! And of course, you can look forward to more live recordings in the union!
A MASSIVE SHOUT OUT AND THANK YOU to everyone who helped the first shows happen and run smoothly, and to all those on show who were hilarious!
I’ll let everyone know on here when the shows are being broadcast, and don’t forget to look out for podcasts from your favourite shows, and our highlights, coming soon

Getting Into Cardiff

The very first “Getting Into Cardiff”…hey, it’s Hannah Cook on the left!

Meanwhile, back to revision…and by “revision”, I mean burying my head in Mini Cheddars.

Cardiff retain the Varsity Shield!

On Wednesday 24th April, Cardiff students went sports mad as Varsity hit the Welsh Institute of Sport and the Millennium Stadium. Swansea students arrived in their thousands to support their University teams also.

At Xpress Radio we began our Varsity coverage from 9am and took listeners right through until 10pm, covering all the scores, trials and tribulations from the day. The biggest crowd draw of the day was the legendary rugby match between Swansea and Cardiff in the Millennium Stadium. In the evening we broadcast live from the stadium and included live commentary from the match, interviews and highlights from the day so far.

Swansea won at the Millennium Stadium in front of 14,000 students, but Cardiff prove they are still Varsity champions after dominating the rest of the sporting fixtures.

Pick up the Gair Rhydd all this week (29/04) for a full Varsity round up

Xpress Radio is now LIVE ONLINE, with some incredible content…

Hello everyone

THERE IS GOOD NEWS – XPRESS RADIO IS NOW LIVE ONLINE! So if you wanna have a listen, click on the listen live button to your left (not the weird blank disc thing).

And now for a VERY long post….

Xpress Radio is finally live, after a battle against technology that some have described as ‘Matrix-esque’ and ‘if Star Wars was in the present day and in a radio station’. Thanks for everyone that stuck with us through that, and had a listen to the shows broadcast from my bedroom! To make up for that we have a load of incredible things coming your way:

Firstly,┬áS┼Án Festival:

S┼Án (pronounced ‘soon’ and Welsh for ‘sound’) Festival was a 4 day festival that took place last week, across a load of venues, with over a hundred bands roaming through the streets and on the stages. If you’ve kept an eye on the Xpress page, you’ll have probably listened to veteran specialist music presenter Jo Southerd doing her ‘Sound of Swn’ build-up shows – if you havent they are under our ‘podcast’ section at the top – so go check them out! Xpress Radio had a venue in town – the great ‘Promised Land’ Pub and got a load of bands to come up and do live sessions and interviews, such as Clock Opera, Al Lewis, Fossil Collective and many more.

Fossil Collective playing in the Promised Land

The sessions and interviews will be playing out in the coming week, and we’ll post here and on the facebook times and shows which they are on. The sessions will be on the playlist as well, so chances are if you are listening to Xpress you’ll catch one! There are more photos on our facebook, and all of the sessions and interviews were filmed by our good friend CUTV, which can be viewed here http://www.cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk/cutv/

Secondly, a new schedule:

We have over 55 brand new shows to watch out for, as well as a load of veteran shows that many of you will recognize from last year. We’re broacasting from 9am/10am every day, and finishing at Midnight, although you can listen to music and prerecords into the night as well! The schedule will be up very soon, so you can work out when to tune in!

Halloween:

Halloween is only 3 days away! With this in mind, the Radio Drama team have been tirelessly working away on some AMAZING radio dramas that will be coming your way from tomorrow. First, we have Tom Durbin’s mysterious drama, known simply as ‘Ouroboros’, playing out at 5.45pm Monday, Tusday and Wednesday next week:

‘The Truth Will Be Unearthed….’

The second one will be following Ouroboros on Halloween night, directed by radio play veteran Sara Caputo, it is a adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe’s ‘The Masque of the Red Death’, guaranteed to spook! It airs from 6.00pm, so make sure you are listening:

The Masque of the Red Death…

Right I’ll stop rambling now. After these we have some other VERY exciting things coming up, but I’ll hold onto those surprises for a bit….

Hey everyone,

While we work on getting everything fixed, we’re trying to bring you as many shows as possible to whet your Xpress appetites. Tonight’s menu brings you a little bit of everything….

Firstly, if you havent heard Jo Southerd and Matt Jones’ brilliant ‘Sound of Swn 2012’ yet, its a fantastic show, with episode 2 coming this thursday! This is your chance to catch-up before then, as from 7-8pm we’ll be repeating last week’s show! There are loads of details of this show in the post below, so have a read then have a listen!

Then from 8pm-10pm we have the fantastic Ed Jenkins, who brings us an awesome mix of tunes perfect for getting you ready for a night out, so if you are in the mood for some wicked drum’n’bass and dance tunes from the freshers ball night that happened recently, get listening to that!

We’ll have a load of shows coming up this week in the evenings, as well as (hopefully) another secret outside broadcast, so watch this space!

It’s always the same with Xpress…

It would not be Xpress Radio without a couple of technical hitches! As per the laws of the universe, our stream decided it didn’t like us the day before we were going live. However, we are now playing out both online and out through the Cardiff Student Union.
Today, the union and online stream have been playing a giant playlist, will all the latest new hits, as well as some awesome classics, so get tuned in to hear that.

…..

Tomorrow, both will be updated to include interviews and sessions done over the summer, and Xpress Radio will be broadcasting live from the Kitchen in the Student Union from 12-3pm, and this will go straight onto the online stream an hour later, as will all of the live shows going on throughout the week! As mentioned, we are going live downstairs in the Union from 12-3pm, for the Sports fayre tomorrow, and the societies fayre’s on Thursday and Friday. Also we have our resident xpress DJ hosting a load of shows in the coming fortnight, and the schedule will be updated to give all you listeners a way to track your favourite shows! Thanks for your patience guys, once again Xpress returns for another year – even if we are using the online stream it from Ed’s bedroom for the moment!
