Trailer Watch: The Amazing Spider-Man 2

With the release of the first trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 the levels of anticipation are about to start building. As first trailers go this is amazing (pardon the pun), because Sony reveal a lot in this trailer, so much so that it feels like the final trailer before the movie. But letÔÇÖs take a closer look at some of the reveals within the trailer.

Warning! Potential Spoilers Ahead

The trailer opens up with a close-up of the back of Andrew GarfieldÔÇÖs Spider-Man and with it comes the first proper glimpse of the new-look Spidey suit; a suit which is very true and accurate to the comic book version. Another suit that is also revealed is RhinoÔÇÖs (Paul Giamatti); in the comics Aleksei Sytsevich and his Rhino suit are physically combined as one, however it appears that in this film it takes on the form of a mech suit. Normally I would hate the fact they completely changed the look from the comics but I have to admit this choice does seem perfect; the suit looks immense and it definitely looks better than a skin-tight muscle suit with a horn on its forehead. It is also important to note the Russian writing imprinted on the mech suit, suggesting the suit, and by extension Rhino, are not affiliated with Oscorp which the audience were previously lead to believe.

For this next Easter egg you have to pay very close attention and be able to read extremely small print. When Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) reveals to Peter that Oscorp has been tracking him his entire life he brings up a list of digital folders on the table. Within this list it is possible to see several folders: ÔÇ£Venom storageÔÇØ, ÔÇ£Eel labÔÇØ, ÔÇ£OctÔÇØ and ÔÇ£Dr ConnorsÔÇØ. The first obviously hints at the villain Venom who has been continuously present in the rumour-mill, with talks of a solo spin-off film, but evidently here it is more likely a set-up for a future villain (because Venom worked so brilliantly the last time, *sigh*). The ÔÇ£Eel labÔÇØ obviously refers to Electro, whoÔÇÖs origin is shown within this film, ÔÇ£OctÔÇØ is Doctor Octopus (from the second film in the original trilogy) and ÔÇ£Dr ConnorsÔÇØ simply pays homage to his role in the previous film.

Since both Electro and Rhino have been announced as the villains in this film there has been speculation about the possibility of the Sinister Six within a later film in the series. In the comics the original Sinister Six consisted of Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, and Sandman. Within this trailer you can easily spot Doctor OctopusÔÇÖ robotic arms and VultureÔÇÖs wings suggesting that these two characters may be involved in the Sinister Six team in a later film. One of the big reveals in this film is Harry Osborn becoming an incarnation of the Green Goblin (again it was previously speculated) thus bringing the villain count up to three (this is worrying as Spider-Man 3 really struggled with the same number and, as we all know, that film was utterly abysmal). I am only speculating here but I believe that if we are to get a live-action incarnation of the Sinister Six then the super-villain team will comprise of HarryÔÇÖs Goblin, Electro, Rhino, Doctor Octopus, Vulture and Kraven the Hunter. It appears that The Amazing Spider-Man film series is taking influence from the Spectacular Spider-Man animated series, in which Oscorp created the villains associated with the Sinister Six (of which Kraven the Hunter was a member, hence my speculative inclusion). What has been show in this trailer is that Oscorp are using technology to create these villains (so far we have seen Electro, Doc Oc and Vulture) and the most likely reasons that these experimentations are taking place is an attempt to find a means to save Norman OsbornÔÇÖs life (Chris Cooper is shown portraying a dying Norman Osborn).

But it is not until the end of this trailer that we are given our first proper look at the filmÔÇÖs main villain, Electro. This is worrying as it is almost as if they forgot who the main antagonist was when trying to juggle a total of three.

  1. The Amazing Spiderman video game actually answers a lot of questions and leads as a set up to the next films. REALLY looking forward to the next film, especially since these films have taken a slighter darker more “realistic” approach to spiderman.

  2. I don’t understand why they have included Rhino as a villain in this film. Electro gives great potential, Rhino is just a fringe villain. Why not retry Doc Oc or Venom? Or even bring in Mysterio, but not Rhino for crying out loud

  3. The Ultimate comics do provide a better costume selection; I really can’t imagine Jamie Foxx donning the green and gold of Electro. The pure blue energy look is so much better

  4. Just thought I’d point out that Rhino’s mechanised suit isn’t a departure from the comics at all. A few Marvel films appear to have been drawing quite heavily from the Ultimate Marvel series, particularly the new Spider-Man films. In that series, Rhino does use a mechanised suit; even the new Electro draws on the Ultimate version, rather than the ridiculous green-and-gold-suited one we had before.
