VP Welfare Candidate Dom Dicks: ÔÇ£I just want to connect with students.ÔÇØ

We caught up with VP Welfare candidate, Dom Dicks, talking sexual health, freshers and his competition in the Welfare race.

With 12 candidates in the running for VP Welfare, Dicks is more concerned with student interaction than keeping tabs on his opposition. ÔÇ£With so many people, youÔÇÖve just got to run your own race,ÔÇØ said Dicks, adding, ÔÇ£I just want to connect with students.ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£I think there may be one or two who havenÔÇÖt put all of their energy into it,ÔÇØ said Dicks, but that, regardless of the outcome of the VP Welfare race, he is confident that ÔÇ£whoever wins will be great. IÔÇÖll completely have faith in [them].ÔÇØ

As a second year student, Dicks believes sabbatical officers shouldnÔÇÖt hold a full-time position for two years, believing theyÔÇÖll be too out-of-touch with student life at the end of their term.

Talking manifesto policies, Dicks aims to secure greater sexual health measures on campus. He said: “A lot of people said they want to put a sexual health clinic on Park Place, and I want to do that too.ÔÇØ

On the topic of his sexual health manifesto policies, Dicks explained that diversity among the student body should be reflected in a flexible approach to sexual health issues. He explained: ÔÇ£some people don’t look at sexual health the same way.ÔÇØ

Dicks is also fighting for greater mental health awareness. He recognised the Union does a lot for mental health issues, but it could still do more by bringing the ÔÇÿMind your HeadÔÇÖ campaign ÔÇ£out of the Union into Halls.ÔÇØ Dicks also hopes to introduce services for homesick freshers and international students.

Whilst on the campaign trail, Dicks has noticed that ÔÇ£not many people really vote in third year because theyÔÇÖre leavingÔÇØ, but reported that first year voters are being surprisingly responsive considering the novelty of SU elections.
